This may already be a thread so merge if needed.
Unis are now contemplating entrance exams to sort the wheat from the chaf on entrance levels.
Teachers grading their own students was never a good idea and hmg using an independent body right back last year seems now to have been the better of two evils.
A few were miss marked and an appeals process was available but bottom line the woke won and now 1000s of students are going to be even more in the dark.
Not the best synopsis but the gist is there I hope.

I read something in the last 24hours about 'record exam grades'. Successive Governments have fcked the state education system, under the banner of 'progression', and now Covid has exposed some major deficiencies.
A question leading from Cryst's comments would be, "Is it any wiser to let Universities set entrance exams, when these institutions are financed by numbers through the door ?"

There is no ideal solution, unfortunately.

I have two kids, one waiting for her A level results ( to claim her place at Uni) & a son waiting for GCSE results to claim his place in 6th form-
Both are due next week(10th & 12th August respectively)my guess is if they get the grades that they want / need they will be pretty miffed if they suddenly find that they have to sit additional exams to proceed, however if they dont get them then they will probably be grateful for another chance.

The question will then become: what rubbish will be in the entrance exams?
No one's allowed to be intelligent these days, unless lecturing us on BBC about our poor political, social or lifestyle choices.

A lot of Unis have been doing this for years asking people to take test exam before it's not new.

I don't see what the issue is if the students are as skilled as the grades claim they should have no problems.

A lot of youngsters got a easy ride with the teachers grading them it should of never happened if uni students could of continued to study using distance learning so could these children.

Well for once we agree grumpy. I still think the original results last year were probably more accurate of the students ability. It was then politicised so was stopped for teachers to call it. No teacher will downgrade their protiges so we are were we are.
As for home learning; lazy parents and wanting free stuff created another issue.

Grade Inflation

I feel sorry for the real high achievers.

My friend has twins they both got top marks in their A levels. They are hard working smart young people who got A's for all of their GCSE exams 2 years ago.

I have no doubt that their scores are accurate and they are both off to university however it is a pity that people like them are lumped in with the undeserving.

A levels have become a joke and do no favours to those sitting them.
