The player would do fine for us. He's better than Riederwald, younger than McArthur and more suited to the current system than Schlupp. Although I'd not expect him to take us to a higher level, Hughes wouldn't let us down either.

More to the point, the players price seems like it might be very attractive in relation to his value, and that's a big consideration in itself.

In the same way that Palace need to ensure our incomings match or exceed our outgoings, so too do we need to ensure the squad value is as great or greater than its cost. This increasingly wasn't the case in the last few years, and it boxed us in terribly.

One way to develop the value of the squad in relation to its cost is to grow another AWB of course, but its also important to take advantage of situations like the one Hughes is in. He'll never play for Real Madrid but that's not the point. If he signed a new three or four year Watford contract tomorrow, he'd immediately be worth at least twice the figures we're talking about at the moment, maybe three times. Right now, his price is possibly far lower than his value, and as a trading company we can't afford to ignore opportunities like that.

It's vital to go all out occasionally and sign good players for vacant positions, like when we paid full market rate for Guehi and Andersen. We can only do that once or twice though, and will generally always need to box clever and find bargains.

A 'bargain' is usually a low price for a player that you'd have been prepared to pay far more for, because he's so vital. It can, however, also mean a very good price on a player you wouldn't have signed for a higher price, because you could probably live without him if you had to.

Even if we know full well that if Hughes did have three years left on his Watford contact we wouldn't even consider paying his transfer price, the fact is that he doesn't, and that changes everything.

Good post BTP but I question whether we paid full value for Andersen (we certainly did for Guehi). I thought we got Andersen at a bargain price.

Heard a comment on the radio about £25m for Ings when he only had 1 year left, the pundit said if he is what you want pay the money now

If we are going down the Man City route then maybe a striker isn’t a priority as we have an abundance of attacking midfielders.

My concern is that he is 26 -29 when a 3 year contract expires - and thought we were moving away from signing players with reduced resale potential. I’d say 5 million is reasonable, Watford have signed a midfielder on loan so they seem to be trying to milk us a bit

Thought we should have matched what Southampton were prepared to pay for Adam Armstrong though. Think Villa were flush with Grealish money but don’t exactly know the Ings price

But will they come back at the same level as before they were injured? If yes then Eze and Olise should be great; Luka on the other hand would not. Then there is the question of further injuries. In any case, Hughes IMO is a better option than any of our current DMs.

It’s no more than a hunch on my part, but I do wonder if Luka is coming back to Palace

Will Hughes isnt the most exciting prospect, but if we can get him for the right money its a sensible signing.

Under PV it looks like we are going to play with more intensity. Asking Connor and Macca to play a whole season is asking a lot.

So we either have 3 players for those 2 slots, or when we have an injury we have to bring in Jairo who just doesn't have the same intensity

Mu understanding is that Ings cost A.Villa £25 Mill.

Yes we do need Hughes, as he is an upgrade on Jairo and Luka and still relatively cheap at 7 million + add ons up to 10 million for someone still only 26

I just hope we don't accidentally buy Hugh Williams instead, who is rubbish apparently and not worth anything near £7mil.

We agree again! When Andersen first went on loan to Fulham I believe his value was up towards £30m. He most definitely is worth more than we paid

Have you not seen Luka for the past two seasons? Slow, unreliable and struggles with a 5 yard backwards pass.

What clubs loan a goal scorer out to another club. Most are desperate for a goal scorer.
