I always liked Andros, but over the last couple of seasons his performances had become a bit erratic, and his goals were few and far between.

I'm not sure we had a great deal of choice in whether he stayed at Palace or not - didn't he turn down a new contract.

Anyway, before wringing our hands too much, let's wait and see if he is still doing the business for Everton come Christmas.

He's always going to score 1 or 2 long shots a season - still not worth the 30+ rubbish games you get out of him.

I like the bloke, and he ran his socks off, but when a player's best attribute is their work rate then alarm bells should be ringing.

Our right-side has been a complete non-factor for years through a combination of poor wingers and very limited full backs - even on Saturday Ayew/Ward offered next to nothing going forward.

It's a huge part of why Wilf has so many quiet days in my opinion.

I was a tiny bit surprised we let him go (I think perhaps he was too) but let's face it, the odd belter aside he never really lit the place up.

I appreciate that it might be harder for a winger to shine in a defensive team (or even just in a weaker team regardless of tactics) but he played five years here under Pardew, Allardyce, De Boer (briefly) and Hodgson. Prior to that he never established himself at Spurs despite several opportunities to do so.

Unless we believe that Vieria's tactics would have brought something amazing out of Townsend that all his former managers didn't, then we aren't missing out. Good luck to the fella, but I'd prefer to see what Olise and Rak-Sahki can do.

Of all our giveaways, Andros is the one I'd like to have kept. He clearly felt badly positioned by Roy, but in fairness the manager had very little option as he was given no funding to strengthen the team.

He's getting first team football at Everton and it's unlikely he would have been first choice here with some of our new players coming through. It was a typical Townsend goal last night so good luck to him.

I just hope he doesn't score like that when we play them.

I am 100% in agreement with your post.

Its early days but it does appear that Benetiz has brought the best out Townsend.

To be fair to RH, he was the right man after debacle DeBoer. We needed to get back to basics and kick on and we did exactly that.

After that the hierarchy seemed content with a guy who guaranteed survival on a shoestring budget, year upon year.

However, it is also true his methods were dire to watch and from Townsend's & Zaha's comments, just as bad to play in.

I don't think Roy ever truly believed we could be anything more than what we currently are... a club that sits just above relegation.

With a monumental shift in direction by the hierarchy and under PV, we now dare to dream.

Good luck to Townsend.... I'd much rather have Olise 😜

All Townsend would do at Palace is Hinder Olise, Rak-Sakyi and Banks evolvement, at 50k a week

Tbf to Everton they have a 30m international goalkeeper. Two cbs that cost combined 50m. A left back for 20m & 2 holding midfielders who cost combined 40+ million. (20m Godfrey waiting in the wings)

When a team has invested 160m in the last 5 years on defensive players alone, you can afford to be a bit more offensive and creative.

Can you imagine if we left the likes of Ward, Kouyate, Luka and PVA exposed with no cover. We would have been murdered every week.

Makes sense Ali!

Kind thoughts to Andros ... maybe Roy’s tactics restrained his flair in recent years but we always stayed up to fight another day and hopefully, we're all now in a better place.

Indeed Henry, we are where we are, the epl, because of Roy, lest we forget!

Will always be thankful to Roy for the job he did with the resources available but seeing Townsend flourish now he's gone is no surprise...

Any player with any flair had the life slowly sucked out of them under Roy and Eze would of ended up exactly the same had Roy stayed. Thankfully it's onto better things for everyone.

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

Of course Roy never had the luxury of having Andersen and Guehi in defence, and naturally players like Townsend would have to take up some defensive responsibility.
Also it's very difficult to argue that without Roy's ability to manage within the tightest of budgets, we would now be operating in the Championship, or worse.

That's nonsense, Eze flourished under Roy.

Hard to say he flourished without seeing Eze under another manager - I'd argue Eze is so talented he would've made an impact whoever was in charge.

I certainly remember plenty of games last year where Eze played as an auxiliary left back and had no meaningful contributions in an attacking sense.
