You learn about Questions marks in primary school. I gather your education might have ended before that point, so I am puzzled how you speak so confidently about such a complicated area of biology.

How do these genes you speak so highly about work? How are these immigrants with the inferior genes able to be so much more successful that you?

Come on Hrolf, stop trying to kid yourself. It's obvious to everyone that you are trying to use bad science from the 1930's to falsely prove a contrived point.

It's obvious to everyone just what you are.

The fact that a simple swab can be used to geographically locate someone's ancestry isn't exactly startlingly new knowledge.

I wasn't really asking for advice Stirlingsays. Just calling up his credentials, because we all know he hasn't got a clue about the nonsense he is reciting.

But at least we've proved that you don't either.

Funny how people just turn up on politics threads with loads of links having never done it before.

It's almost like they are part of a sleeper cell.

Surely just turning up is what everyone does. Although I am not sure that PalazioVecchio has full turned up to life yet. His posts are so musical geeza that I am inclined to believe he is a Peterhouse don running a sociology study.

I am decided by the idea that I am a sleeper. I just took a look and I was surprised to see that I first logged on the HoL 17 years ago, how time flies. Having settled in with a reassuringly on message post about Andy Johnson’s ability to find space inside the box I then lay in wait, a liberal cicada, looking for the optimum moment to post.

I think that although you claim that you like to be challenged the reality is that you fear it. There is a great deal of, ‘it’s my ball and if I can't win then no one can play', going on here. Perhaps you and Stirlingsays feel that it’s your right to dominate these posts?

An accusation that I am condescending is your latest complaint. I have to admit that sometimes the debate gets a little wearisome and there is an intimation to sarcasm. Beyond that, I see no point in going. Once you get rude what’s the point?

Perhaps you are wondering why I am here? In general, I look at the HoL to check on football stuff about once couple of days. I rarely post anything and almost never before have I looked at the politics threads. I was sure it would be feeble nonsense, and how right I was, (not condescending - just honest).

When I started looking at this thread, however, I was shocked at the level of misinformation and felt moved to contribute. The whole set-up is rather attractive because the fallacies of your arguments are so obvious it’s very easy to expose them.

You claim not to be a bully but it’s pretty clear that you are and Stirlingsays is too. You seek to dominate with your bombastic, bumptious preening but it just looks to be self-gratifying.

Personally, I am oblivious to it and at the same time fascinated by it. What made you like that? Poor parenting, poor education, the lack of or too much of something?

Have you tried therapy?

Can I just make something clear, because there are accusations of bullying going on here.

If someone feels bullied by me, can they please let me know and I won't post at them.

I suspect certain posters are creating false pictures on this. The want to limit what can be said on the forum.

Robust debate is one thing, trolling is one thing. However, I don't like the accusation that I've bullied someone when the situation can be sorted out so easily.

I know a poster on here who has straight out refused a request to stop posting at someone yet I've always made it clear I'd respect that request.....Yet I'm a bully apparently.

Where did you hear that?
It's worrying that you know this but it is also reassuring.
Keep listening, don't listen, spread the word and tell no one.

Look as I said I am happy to tolerate it, robust debate is why I am here. It's clear that the line between robust and people feeling browbeat is thin. So please let's all be careful.

When people get the hump and avoid the points made they've generally lost the argument.

Anyway, let's stop the genealogy crap and get back to the question.

The French and British have hundreds of miles of coastline to protect in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.

With rugged terrain and a huge tidal range it's been notorious for smuggling for centuries. For the last few decades boarder patrols have been losing the same game of cat an mouse with drug smugglers.

A RIB can travel at about 30 knots. The narrowest part of the channel is 20 miles. That means once they are at sea they can make the journey in 45 minutes.

By the time they have been spotted, it's too late.

Much like Atlantic convey, the people traffickers travelling in large numbers to overrun anything the French or British can do. Maybe a boat her or there will get caught, but it will take a huge amount of resources to deliver a little reward.

Other tools need to be used to stop this. Perhaps stricter controls on boat ownership, more checks on private minibuses? We've bought in stronger Modern Slavery laws and more controls for renting property. Investigate Uber/deliveroo and pick up staff who are supposed working 120 hours a week as multiple people use the same ID. Pick people up where it is easy, not where it is difficult.

Whilst the idea of using some great flotilla sturs up ideas of patriotism in right wing media circles, in reality, your just pissing in the wind if you think that would work.

I kind of respect the desire to get back onto the thread's subject matter.

I agree with your points essentially. Though the French will do nothing about it. Changing 'human rights' law to make deportations easier would work....but similar to what you say, there's no hope of that happening.

It would be nice if they could all be sent to Gary Lineker's gaff...

If there was a role reversal, would you want the British government spending money and resources to resolve a French problem?

Not sure Human Rights rules changes would get to what you want either. Using investigate Human Rights laws to deport people would be a lengthy, expensive legal process with no guarantee of knowing what the outcome will be. Changing the fundermental laws would be even more difficult... you'd be looking at decades before anything is done, if anything happens at all.

Picking up people at sea is very difficult. I could go on about why it is for a while, but I hope you've agreed and accepted that.

One would expect that once these people land, they are put in a minibus/vans and carted off somewhere. ANPR cameras, other technology, and big data analysis could do the work of hundreds of policemen in a short amount of time and flag up suspect vehicles. However, even at break neck speed, this would take a couple of years to set up, so there is some catch up to do.

It takes 30 police officers to arrest a van full of illegal immigrants. It takes two to knock on the door of the van owners house and impound the van.

I agree that stopping boats from being launched is near impossible. They will catch a few by pure luck but the criminal gangs are mobile and ruthless. They care nothing for the migrants, just for the money.

The idea that you restrict the ability to buy an inflatable boat in northern France night has some potential, although I expect the French have already looked at that. I am sure that the French would welcome some practical legal ideas for how to stop boats from leaving. It’s costing them a lot of money completely apart from the UK contribution.

As has been said it’s a very long coastline and it’s getting longer as some boats are being launched as far west as the Cotentin Peninsula. The 627 million that the UK is giving to France sounds like a lot, (I mean it’s nearly two red buses worth), but it is over two years. A large part of it is being spent on building migrant accommodation in Calais and other related projects.

Once the boats have been launched the French will not wish to intercept as this is likely to cause a capsize which then will likely lead to deaths. Once boats are in UK waters the law rightly requires them to be rescued.

No doubt Priti Patel is pressing for a photoshoot of herself, like Kate Winslet, on the prow of RN frigate shouting at some poor unfortunate people desperate to change their lives.
