Australia is free to do business as it pleases. Originally a very big deal was made out of France getting the contract. The UK was snubbed. The French have not delivered and now Australia is free to dump them. A lot of the rhetoric on here seems to suggest somehow that China are the good guys and Britain, the US and Australia are sabre rattling.

The simple questions could be: are China great, are the people free?
Have China been sabre rattling for years in the are? Yet now some countries push back, but they are wrong, how exactly does that work?
Loads of the countries in that region are arming. Do we need to vilify them too? They haven't bought French either. France throwing a tantrum against English speaking influence in an election year, who'd have thought it?

The sabre-rattling is happening on all sides. The thing is the Chinese actually have some sabres whereas the UK has a couple of pen knives and a soup ladle. The US have plenty of sabres but they generally rattle them too late in the wrong direction. An example of this was the Trump administration with North Korea, who keep saying that they definitely have a sabre. The Korean sabre is almost certainly not a very good one. It makes a lot of noise when it’s rattled but it’s also likely that the blade will fall off. As for the Australians, they have some sabres on their wish list and they say that they will almost certainly rattle them when they arrive in about 10 years time. Up until then, they will just tell the Chinese that they are cross and see if that works.

There is no British base in Singapore. I have been to Sembawang many times.

The bunkering is handled by a private companies.

A handful of personnel does not constitute a base.

My question was primarily to the poster who stated there was a base in Singapore.

They are both based at Sembawang, but are tiny compared to what used to be there. Ours has only 2 or 3 personnel and exists to organise bunkering facilities for visiting ships. I know because in 2018 I visited and had lunch with their officers at "HMS Terror". This used to be the officers club at our naval base but is now run by the US military who now dominate everything there.

Sembawang dockyard, which was our naval base, is now a privately owned business in which we lease an office.

I was there to lay a wreath on the memorial to the sinking of the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse in 1941 by Japanese bombers. My father, who was on the POW survived but lost many shipmates. Security was very high, but I was given a tour of the dockyard and saw where the POW was berthed before its last voyage.

The dockyard is huge, and we must have had a very significant presence there at one time. Not now.

You love arguing over semantics, don't you. Whether you want to call it a "base" is up to you. It's all that we have there now permanently, and it's at Sembawang. I saw it with my own eyes when I went to the Terror Club, which is now a facility run by the US forces.

I didn't say the bunkering was done by our personnel! I said they organised it. Which they do. Not just for British ships, but for those of our allies.

He shouldn't confuse size with significance. The British Defence Singapore Support Unit exists as a demonstrable commitment to the five powers defence arrangement. People love to run the country down.

Direct link to the Royal Navy.

Our presence is not huge however its there, also numbers go up and numbers go down, it depends very much on what British ships dock there.

I would imagine in coming years we'll see a swelling of our numbers in the region.

Wisbech is 100% spot on with his post.

As for the wiki link you can type 'white monkey' & china into google and get pretty much an unlimited amount of links to what im talking about, wiki was conveniently at the top.
Actually a complete coincedence but this popped up on my youtube feed today, wait for the bit where her Belgian husband starts talking about china, honestly come back here & tell me thats normal behaviour.

The ccp do love a honey trap...

As you know the ccp rarely release info directly instead they opt to put information out via their state media, if it comes from chinese media its a sure bet its been approved from the top.
I guess its just the chinese way of calling people useful idiots except a little more derogatory as said people are reduced to monkeys.

Semantics is an excuse often used by the incorrect.

I am not running the country down at all.

What you call semantics are called details.

If people on here want to post predictions of what is going to happen militarily in the part of the world where I live then being accurate has importance, at least to me.

You obviously think it's better. We can always ask the Uighurs and Tibetans too. Barely ever seen such brainwashed rubbish. Were you captured in Vietnam and forced to play Russian roulette? How long did you spend in re-education?

Here is the EU trying to bully Australia. Let's spell two things out for our pro China and EU brainwashed posters.
Australia will tell them where exactly to stick it.
The deal is cancelled because France couldn't and wouldn't deliver on time.

Yes I am.

Also you're incredibly hard work to converse with on here.
I wish you the best of luck & hope war doesn't find its way to your doorstep.
