Either for Big clubs or Big Countries.

How does one measure 'referee equanimity, or referee bias'. Call me paranoid but i am certain the bias does exist.

................

FiFa ? can you expect fair refereeing between, say, Brazil and Estonia ?

Then we have Clattenburg doing a photo-opportunity with old Purple Nose at Wembley.

statistical chance does suggest that smaller clubs should sometimes win silverware. Greece in the European cup, Leicester in the Prem. But it does seem to happen very rarely.

The way statistical chance works is that 1000 well equipped Roman legionaries will Always beat 1000 naked Celts in a planned pitched battle. But one Celt against one Roman ....... could sometimes see the Eagle falling beneath the blue face of the Wode. Maybe just 20% of the time.

and before we Eagles get all high and mighty, remember if we face Hartlepool in the FA cup, will we benefit from referee bias ?

discuss

Liam Brady described them as a notoriously corrupt outfit......implying that its not just the back offices & bank accounts that sees all the dodgy ethics. The Theirry Henry deliberate handball being the putative puta.

How many red cards did Didier Drogba ever get for diving ? How many players has Sergio Ramos sent to hospital ?

No, Sat Jan 7th 1978 3rd round FA Cup Hartlepool away we lost 2-1.

Try being a ref before you accuse them of 'bias' some of us on here don't like or agree with that.

I'm getting tired of seeing threads recently taking pops at refs.

Leave them alone lads. On the whole they do a very tricky job well. The interpretation of the laws may have moved on, but that's called progress. I've enjoyed watching games this season much more, thanks to the free flowing play with less whistle blowing and consequent interruptions.

In the last few days, on different threads, I've made the same comment. I called it roundabouts and swings, some you win, some you lose.

Any perceived bias is in the eyes of the beholder.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

With VAR they have tried to take some of the variability out of the game and make it more binary (ball touching hand in the box, offside by 1mm etc.), but they you have some decisions being correct in the eyes of the law but look ludicrous to EVERYONE. So they have pulled it back a bit this season.

It’s a really difficult balance, as there are a lot of sports where you can be pretty close to 100% accurate (cricket for example with all the stump tech).

Personally I think you win some and you lose some. I’d prefer more challenges to be allowed, and give the benefit to the attacking team. I’d also prefer to see a challenge based system. In other sports it works really well and adds to the drama rather than constant TV reviews.

We didn't a few years ago when they beat us 1-0 and Jeff stelling was on sky. He supports the pool and was quite excited if I remember correctly. I will say that the last away game of theirs every season is an event. A couple of years ago they all dressed as smurfs. Got national coverage I beleive.
Anyway I digress and yes I think bias does exist but only with the refs on the day. Although Mr Dean doesn't seem to care who he upsets so isn't included imo.

my theory : when it is a very fast 50:50 tackle,

which kind of mistake will the ref get more flak for....?

- punish the big team
or
- punish the small team

So that's human error rather than bias.

I know sometimes it really seems like there is a big team bias but other than it being a huge (and impossible) network of conspiracy then I can't see a reason for it happening.

"Liverpool took Crystal Palace apart last weekend, but otherwise the Eagles have done OK so far under Patrick Vieira".

Not just refs.

Above is a quote from Mark Lawrenson who is predicting 1-1 V Brighton.

Was he watching the same match as everyone else!!
