Did you not see him play? - he got called up to the provisional England Euro's squad. The way he runs with ball so effortlessly makes him a major threat. It was also his first season in the prem in what was a negative/defensive team, compared with Gallagher who played all last season in the prem with WBA and now playing in a more progressive/attacking side.

The thought of Eze, Gallagher and Zaha in the same team is mouthwatering.

I agree with your sentiments. Once Eze moved into the centre he was running the show with some of his through-balls weighted to absolute perfection. Also, let's not ignore that he scored two of the goals of the season. Where Zaha is about pace, power and trickery, Eze just seems to flow through players like a leaf floating down a stream, the obstacles rolling off him.

What was abundantly clear is that he is useless as a defensive player, which makes it all the more remarkable that he still shone in Roy's system. If he gets back to full fitness he'll be the jewel in Viera's system, I have absolutely no doubts about this, and may even be pushing for England again by next summer.

Olise looks an exciting runner as well. Presumably we bought Hughes to do the donkey work to allow them to do what they're good at; either together or individually.

May I respectfully disagree. He may not be one for crunching sliding tackles but I dont think he has been caught napping like Jairo did last week vs 'pool. That is why Roy trusted him in the middle - he closed down the space. And he was no slouch.

May I respectfully disagree with your respectful disagreement? I love watching Eze play, but I can remember at least three occasions last season when Eze had fallen asleep and very obviously not tracked his runner, when we conceded as a result.

Hopefully when he's back this season we won't be as reliant on him to do so.

I do agree, as much as we all love Eze a defensive midfielder he is not, attacking midfielder he most definitely is. Hopefully we will see him sometime in the 2nd half of this season, my may concern at present is how well he will recover from this terrible injury and there is no guarantee that he will be the same player he was before the injury!

Take your point about Eze and defence last season - though I think you overstate slightly.

More pertinently though I suspect it may be misleading to use last season's performances as an indicator for this season. This especially goes for defence simply because we are defending in a quite different way. If you strip out the Chelsea match I've seen stats showing us as one of the pressingest sides in the league. This means that Eze will come into a set up where his defensive duties are largely upfield and in pressing and not holding a line. My guess he'll be much more suited to that approach and his defensive frailties will be much less exposed.

To see what I mean it's worth looking at the relative stats this season and last for Wilf - his pressing stats are more or less doubled what they were.

Yes, that's the concern that I, and I imagine many others, share, but have been reluctant to admit it. I feel slightly queasy when ever I read a post about how great everything's going to be when Eze returns.

How do folks see Eze, Olise, Zaha and Edouard in the same team? I struggle

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

I'd like to see:

Guaita or Butland

Ferguson, Andersson, Guehi, Mitchell

Gallagher, Hughes, Eze

Olise, Eduard, Zaha

That could end up being our best line up.

Could be. But I think McArthur, Beneteke and probably Luka will prove to be better than the much-hyped replacements.

I'd be very surprised if Benteke is better than Edouard, as Benteke is too statuesque. Whilst Hughes is younger than both McArthur and Luka and was considered by many at Watford as a future captain, so he deserves a try and will undoubtedly outlast the other two.
