Ayew should have done better with his chance, but I thought he had a pretty good game. He works hard, wins some free kicks, travels well with the ball and has a positive contribution to the game. Especially in the first half, and playing the way we do we need good footballers on the pitch.

Maybe in time Olise will replace him, but IMO Olise has to earn that place. Ayew isn’t bad, and definitely not bad enough to be dropped.

Benteke is an embarrassment. I thought he was the right sub, fresh legs to help press, some extra height for when they started throwing bodies in the box etc. His lack of effort and seaming inability to sprint is just unforgivable. You can (kind of) excuse him not scoring, but effort is free. And he saw how much joy we had with the high press …he just couldn’t be bothered.

I thought that Ayew had a good game for once last night - bar his miss - which was criminal to not even hit the target - he went for the smallest area rather than the goal as a whole - grrr!
Benteke - he has never really done it for Palace and whether that is all down to him or down to our system who knows.
They are good players to have on the bench and I am sure that will be the long term game plan.
Rome wasn't built in a day - except in Weetabix adverts anyway!

I think most agree that Ayew is playing out of position. The Manager is selecting him because he thinks he's currently the best man for the job. Olise only recently returned from injury and is unproven at this level. PV is breaking him in gently - I realise from reading your posts that this is a concept that you find difficult to grasp.

As for Benteke, look at it this way. We spent big on Edouard. We potentially have spent big on Mateta, although I doubt we will see him signed permanently. We don't have unlimited funds. So re-signing Benteke made absolute sense.

Edouard started last night and looks set to get a run in the team. Mateta is assessed, as are all the players, on a daily basis. If he's not getting game time there is a reason for it. As for Rob Street, I think he's a big, bustling grafter but I don't think he's even remotely close to a first team spot. And I'll go on record now and say that I don't think he'll make it at Palace although I hope I'm proven wrong.

Fair point re Ayew. I don't dislike Ayew but he is not a right sided player. Works hard and helps Ward but lacks pace and can't cross the ball.

Part of the problem is that PV seems a very cautious manager. He rarely changes the starting X1 and his subs are pretty predictable.

Last night Tekkers and Kouyate one for Edouard and Luka after c70 minutes were so predictable.

Ayew run himself into the ground. With 10 left i thought would he maybe go to 442 and push Macca on the right and bring on Olise to give us some pace upfront. Instead he goes for the predictable Jeff S option.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Ayew start this weekend although his confidence is getting lower by the game

Love how he is somehow scapegoated

Wow... Just wow...

So Benteke came on and did his job for the last 15 did he and the other 10 on the pitch sat back??... Literally hilarious.

He came on and did absolutely nothing. He provided no presence and didn't hold the ball up because as usual his touch let him down...
In a way I can live with that but what I can't live with is laziness... He was bone idle and disinterested when he came on.

For Ayew to not actually hit the target or get the keeper to make a save was unbelievable. I was 20 rows back from the goal and it looked bad. Watched it this morning on Sky and it doesn’t look any better.

Tekkers what can you say that hasn’t been said before. That short corner bollocks sums it up really…

Patrick and his backroom team will have learnt so much from last nights game. Roll on Leicester.

This... Benteke was shocking last night but you have to ask why we changed tactics in a tight game we were on top of.

But the footbal we played in the first half (and at anfield) was some of the best Ive seen from palace...

we just cant be a pretty team that goes down like fulham or norwich...

for the record I didnt think Ayew was bad, hes just not in the same league as Wilf or Conor and it shows...

In my post match post just now I said I thought it unfair to pick out individuals for criticism after last night's 3rdperformance.

However, Benteke has always appeared to me to be slow and ponderous both on and off the ball. He fails to anticipate where there might be space or opportunity. His redeeming strength is his ability to head the ball, but too often wide of target. Was never keen to see him come to Palace and certainly not keen now to see him stay. Although Edouard needs a little more time to adapt he already looks keener, sharper and faster.

The other subject of this thread, Ayew, is OK. He at least makes a contribution although I yelled profanities when he missed that sitter.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Seems the media are picking up on the angst towards Ayew

Do many managers often change their starting 11's when doing well. Over the last couple of games PV has transitioned Luka and Eduard in, and I'm sure Olise will also come in when ready. Out of interest what changes to the starting 11 did you want?

For what its worth I think the subs were right (on paper). The game was starting to swing, and we couldn't really get the ball to stick up top. Plus they are a big side. So bring on some height and some fresh legs. Unfortunately Benteke didn't put a shift in, so we were basically down to 10 men.

Viera isn't stupid and would have seen what we saw. Will he trust that he can bring Benteke on for the last 15 to continue the good pressing work and help lead from the front? I doubt it.

(In the same way that after Jairo's shocker I doubt he'll get a look in for a while.)

PV inherited these two and they are not typical of the younger, eager players PV has brought in. A January spring clean looks inevitable.

You don’t seem to realise that Vieira sees the players in training everyday, has played the game at the highest level and a proven winner. It’s pretty obvious that some on here are far more qualified and a better judge of players than him.

I can’t be too harsh on Ayew as he’s a trier and he was not an expensive purchase.
However, I only think he warrants a place on the bench at best.
He doesn’t seem to know when to release the ball and frequently misses the opportunity to make telling passes to better placed teammates because of his head down approach.
With regard to Benteke it seems evident at this early stage he will not suit Vieira’s playing style.
He’s not mobile, does not press and lacks incisive movement around the box.
I would go as far to say that if Edouard was unavailable I would prefer Ayew in the centre forward role than Benteke.
I’m not suggesting Ayew is the better player or goalscorer, but at least he will hustle the defenders and run across the frontline.
Benteke’s immobile style of just waiting for the ball will not work in Vieira’s system in my view.
