You guys are hilarious. No really, I can’t hold back the laughter.
Or just maybe we realise a striker’s contribution goes beyond just goals. Like Roy said. Like PV has said.

But you guys know better ay?

I did say ,if you read my post , about Benteke helping out in defence and the ball laid on to Ayew .
After seeing Edouard running his heart out and getting knackered is any wonder Benteke looked slow .

It could be argued that these sorts of things are said to not totally destroy a players confidence, just like you do with kids.

I have my own (negative) opinion on CB, but equally the fact a manager like Roy who frankly had scant little other options open to him didn't come out and say

"Yeah, actually he's proper s***e" isn't the glowing endorsement you perhaps think it is.

All I know is when I read about former and current great strikers and centre forwards the top keywords always seem to appear...

Ruthless, clinical, goal machine, eye for goal, pace, instinct.

Rarely do I ever read about Michael Owen, Tevez, Ronaldo, Shearer or whoever and hear people wax lyrical about their hold up play, and how they bring others into the game.... All whilst said team is either losing or being one of the lowest scoring teams in the league.

The only one I can think of was Heskey, who was s***e then and had the same people saying the same things some do about Benteke, all whilst the England squad lumbered along with 1-0 wins until getting knocked out disappointingly in a major tournament."

I do think Bentenke had a role in the Hodgson game plan, which generally seemed to be 10 men behind the ball then hit it long for Bentenke to hold up and bring others into play. Vieira seems to want more control of the ball and it seems so far that he wants lots of energy and to put the opposition under pressure, rather than sitting back and allowing them onto us. If this is the tactic we are going to use then I really can't see Bentenke having a starting role as he is not going to change.

I've been more patient and supportive of Bentenke than many, but I think his time is done. He does the occasional nice lay-off, but really his only major asset left is his ability in the air. Given how we've played this first six games the only time that seems like it'll be a real benefit is defending corners. In preseason Mateta looked no more mobile than Bentenke, so I feel he will probably return to Mainz in January.

Indeed a striker's contribution should go beyond goals. But first and foremost it has to be goals.

It's very sweet of Roy and PV to be so kind about Benteke in the public domain, and I understand that they have to play that game while we're desperately short of striking options (outside of Edouard). But really, anyone can see that they're just trying to nurture what little confidence and ability he has left before we can move him out of the club.

I actually can live with the lack of goals, I can no longer stand the lack of effort.

It was a tough game against Brighton, every player gave it their all and worked their socks off. All apart from him.

I also suspect that PV is working to build the guy up rather than tear him apart. But unless he starts to work his minutes will surely be limited.

Those critical of Benteke and in turn PV's quoted support for the player clearly know nothing about man management.

What do you seriously expect PV to do other than publicly encourage in an effort to improve Benteke's performance ?

We don't have an abundance of quality strikers at the club. Edouard we have high hopes for but his is a big step of from the level of football he's used to. Mateta shows no signs of being up to the standard required. And my view of young Street I've already stated. That only leaves Ayew if or when he is switched from wide right.

So we need Benteke right now, like it or not

Love how he is somehow scapegoated

To be fair, though, it's not only about when we're in possession. Ok, when we are he is expected to hold the ball up and link play. It may well be that he hasn't received the service to do this but when the opposition had the ball, we had, up to then, pressed them high with players actively hunting the ball down. This was a tactic used well and effectively against Brighton: it stifled them.

When CB came on, he didn't continue that work. When their defence had the ball, he wasn't hunting anything down but chose to amble around and merely stand in front of the defenders.

It is out of line with his teammates and disappointing to the fans, who expect more vigor and hard work from their players.

This just isn't acceptable imo.
