An early memory of Palace for me was Terry Long crashing in a long range goal in the famous friendly vs Real Madrid ...

I got to know Terry quite well after he retired, as we were neighbours. He lived in High Wycombe and whilst playing for Wycombe Wanderers was recommended to the club by one of our Directors, who was part of the family that owned Ercol Furniture.

I, too, saw the game against Real Madrid and was on the Holmesdale right behind the shot. I think it's fair to say that the defenders gave him the time and space to hit it! It was, after all, an exhibition match, but so wonderful to see their world-class stars at our ground. Terry was very laid back about it!

He played in the days of the maximum wage, so did not live the superstar life they do now in the PL. I lost touch when we moved on. Sad to know he has passed.

That's sad - RIP Terry.
I remember the Real Madrid goal and his testimonial.
Not a star, but I remember him as a reliable, sound player who was held in high regard and affection by the fans.

Just seen this thread.
Terry Long - such a great player for Palace in the day. I too remember the Real Madrid goal but he was more than just that. A real pro who never let the team or the fans down. RIP Terry

I thought the score was something silly like 7-5 but that may have been the George Petchy testimonial game a year or two later.

It seems that CPFC Trust asked the club why they hadn’t commemorated Terry, when they had Jimmy Greaves and Roger Hunt, apparently it had not been considered! Absolutely staggering

That is really disappointing for a player who had the second highest number of appearances for the club.
One ex-player some will remember is Roy Barry, a pretty fiercesome competitor, who is still going strong at 79. When last seen in April he was delivering for a local fishmonger.

Scored the only goal on my first visit to 'The Temple of Football' against QPR in 1967. Never saw it mind you, as I was stuck at the back of the Holmesdale with my Grandad, who wouldn't let me down to the front on my own! My Gramps bought me a hotdog for missing the goal which made me sick all night. My nan told him never to take me to the Palace again!

Next time I went was when we beat Fulham 3-2 to gain promotion to Div 1 for the first time ever.

RIP Terry Long - A true Palace great!

According to Gary Imlach's book about his dad, you're right, 7-5 to the Internationals.

Can't find anything on the new pfaffed CPFC website, which is a shame. Still as 'Spider' posted the club didnt deem it important.
