I get angry and want to hang people at first as well but the death penalty was state revenge and innocent people were executed in error. The court system is not infallible and once done it cannot later be retracted if proved to be wrong. The hangman himself, Pierrepoint changed his view on hanging saying it was not a deterrent.

Pope John Paul II , Ronald Reagan, JFK if a man of violence wants to get somebody, it is almost impossible to guarantee the safety of said victim. Reagan and the Pope had an army of bodyguards and the bullets still got through. As mentioned on the Norway Bow & Arrow attack. Its people doing the violence, not the kitchen knife per se. The Solution ? not sure if one even exists. Do we want to live in a society of leaders who hide behind bulletproof plexi glass and technology ? However, it can be made pretty difficult and even back in the day most attempts would fail....even going back to Castro. Now presidents are even harder to get at and give speeches behind bullet proof screens with lots of security even before the events. I'd say both Obama and Trump had a lot of heat willing to end them but security seemed to be pretty effective. I agree that it's difficult to stop.

However, it can be made pretty difficult and even back in the day most attempts would fail....even going back to Castro.

Now presidents are even harder to get at and give speeches behind bullet proof screens with lots of security even before the events.

I'd say both Obama and Trump had a lot of heat willing to end them but security seemed to be pretty effective.
