I wrote a post a little while ago where I suggested that Benteke's acquisition has held us back; a large sum was invested in his transfer fee and salary so much so that there was nothing left in the kitty for back up. Indeed, Roy was pushed at one point to experiment with Zaha and Townsend up front! Ironically we lucked out on a cheapo signing, Ayew, who when given the opportunity scored more in one season than Benteke in three, this in a Hodgson team not at that point renowned for creating bucketloads of chances.
To the present, we make a clear statement with the acquistion of Edouard, who one presumes is to be our centre forward moving on. Except that PV is making the same mistake as Hodgson, putting square pegs in round holes to accomodate Benteke.
To cut a long story short, Benteke isn't good enough to be the main man, too many appalling misses that are well catalogued by his statistical return over the seasons.

Correct

It’s a conundrum for sure as no one attacks the ball in the air like Tekkers and he is playing better now. One thing from yesterday, Olise was sending some decent balls into the box for Tekkers to attack, something that has been missing for 3 seasons now. Really impressed with Micheal Olise and Tyrick Mitchell yesterday. A draw was the least we deserved and Tekkers was inches away from scoring a second and third. He hit the post and the bar and on any other day they would have gone in.

After spending £80m we have fewer points than we had at the same stage last season.
With Man City next up we could very likely be just two points from the bottom three, we seem to be going backwards, sleepwalking in to a relegation battle.

Are you insane, or on the wind up?

Taking yesterday as an example we dominated a team that last season were pretty similar ability wise to us. They salvaged a point because of an exceptional individual moment.

Yes its frustrating, but I'd rather walk away from games feeling frustrated that we should have done. Instead of lucky that we scored with our only chance.

We knew this season would be a bit of a transition, and there is stuff to work on. But its 90% positive at the min.

try to enjoy the good stuff. If not why not go and support Man City, they win every week

In my view the only way Benteke and Edouard can be properly accommodated in the same team is if we play two up front.
This may be unlikely if Vieira remains wedded to a 433 formation.
I thought Benteke and Edouard showed pleasing signs of link up play yesterday , but if Edouard plays in a wider role you’re not really playing to his strengths in and around the box.
It may be a case of making adjustments in formation during games as many top managers do.

Correct, but is Viera a top Manager or a Roy Keane, only time will tell

I’m having to change view of Andersen and Guehi who, as a pair, lack strength in the air and leadership defending the penalty area.

We’ve looked weak defending the first ball and non-existent on the second too many times now for it to be bad luck which leaves a number of question marks and may force us to play Benteke for the wrong reasons.

The first thing a central defender needs to be is strong in the air and a good organiser. As good as the new players are with the ball at their feet I think our inability to defend the area is killing us and is serious worry for the remainder of the season.

Interesting perspective Rachid. I was reflecting in similar terms last night as well. I like both Andersen and Guehi as they contribute so much to our progressive game and thei9r defensive play on the deck is generally fine. The problem, as you say, is in the air and especially at corners. Having said that we have been very unlucky with some of the goals from corners, e.g.:
- Guaita's firm punch to beyond the penalty area sees Keita score an absolute screamer
- Wilson's goal yesterday; had we scored one like that we would have raved about it.
- the Aubameyang goal very unfortunate to fall as it did.
I'm inclined, though, to give the Andersen/Guehi partnership time as I believe the positives from it will outweigh the negatives.

After sleeping on it, I feel better about the result today.

I was at the game and thought we were robbed for the disallowed goal but looking at the highlights it was clearly a foul that helped Benteke score.

Benteke was our man yesterday to score another goal and he didn't quite have it in him. It's a bit of a shame to see Edouard (clearly a better player technically speaking, if not overall) out on the wing. Yet perhaps Viera (and Roy before) sees something in Benteke (big target man?) that we the fans don't really seem to be aware of.

There were shades of last season - another team who were there for the taking at home who we couldn't breakdown. A lot of possession yet not many shots on goal. Chance creation is probably the most important metric in a game and that is the area we need to improve. A bit more intelligence in the final third.

We were trying to pass it through a very crowded and tightly packed defence and it wasn't easy. No space at all. Newcastle came for a point and got their point.

Benteke and Edouard play as a pair, Benteke is now getting the service and is getting back to his best. Every striker misses chances, but what appears to be missed by most, he is getting in position to get chances.

Gutted about the results but as I said the other day on the predictions thread we never seem to have any luck with Newcastle.

Can't argue about the disallowed goal but I can moan about Newcastle getting away with plenty all over the pitch.

Still we played well and created some chances I think we now need a little luck and then I can see us going on a run.

Alas, Benteke misses more than most, often at crucial moments, as we have all witnessed and is well documented in his goal return for the club during his time with us.
I honestly thought that the signing of Edouard meant that he would become our main centre forward at some point during this season.
Indeed, had he been one on one with the keeper I think there would have been a much stronger chance of the ball ending up in the back of the net than Beneteke's risible effort.

In addition to this I would add - that each game we get better / stronger, yes there are still niggles but the football is so much better to watch - also the fact that we are trying to integrate players, a little tweak here & there, is very exciting for now & the games coming up - Oh for sure I would be happier with a few more points ( who wouldn't be) but if you look at the overall picture this is almost dreamland compared to what we were watching before.

Should have killed this game, they scored a great goal but we should have put this one to bed. Tekkers seems to have got the fire back in his belly. He was really unlucky not to have a hat trick today.

The ref was awful not just his general decision making but time allowed in injury time. He played 2 minutes in the first half and the Luka stoppage was at least 3 to 4 minutes. There should have at least been 5 minutes of injury time alone in the first half. Fair play to Newcastle they parked the bus and played

I think Tekkers was hero and villain, he scored a good goal and was unlucky with an overhead kick and a header that hit the bar as well as the VAR 'goal' but he also missed two sitters that im sure Edouard would have buried and it cost us in the end
