Lewes have 5 bonfire societies in the 1 town. That makes up 5 separate parade routes, meeting up at the bonfire site. Last year police closed all access routes to Lewes by late afternoon, "to prevent outsiders" enjoying the night.
Perhaps now it is a ticket only event, but I don't think they'll stop determined fireworks-watchers from outside the town.

It's only over a few nights a year. It scares me dog half to death but you can only sanitise life so much.

We only had 2 or 3 rockets last night, in the outer reaches of Wales.
It was enough for the dog to sleep under the bed, but not before pl55ing on the carpet.

Lots of livestock in the immediate area, as well as pets. Just think it's a bit unnecessary that Joe Public can buy fireworks over the counter and not be held responsible for their (mis)-use.

(*Hypocrite alert" and yes I used to throw fireworks when i was a kid, but these days fireworks just seem to be far more dangerous than when I used to chuck around tupenny bangers. And I'm largely talking about adults misbehaviour in this instance)

The thing is, you could pick on hundreds of thousands of human activities that are ecologically unsound. Footballers participating in pan-European or international tournaments for example.

I'm afraid that the human race is inherently selfish, so people will continue to do whatever they choose in order to gratify themselves - whether it's speeding through villages in a s***ty old BMW or taking their regulation holiday in Tenerife-ee.

This is why all this climate stuff - the new Puritanism - is in my view a waste of time. The human race is f***ed beyond salvation, but the planet will live on once we have gone.

I have a confession to make.

My wife and I went to our daughter's home last night for a mini firework display in their garden, mainly for the benefit our grandaughter. I enjoyed it. Not so much the fireworks, but the sheer joy they gave the little girl. I can remember the same excitement when I was a boy.

Mind you, the fireworks were crap. All with different, highly descriptive names in different packaging, but most looked and sounded the same. Made in bloody China.

I recall such names as Pains, Standard, Astra and Brocks fireworks made in England. Are they still around? Brocks were founded in 1698 by John Brock who, strangely enough, died on the 5th of November 1720.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Sounds like a good time was had . And home sets or fireworks usually are pretty crap really .
