Sad. He was the first captain I remember. He was a tidy player - he and John Loughlan were a steady pair and his goal against Leeds was amusing.
RIP Shovel.

Was that the one where we were losing last couple of minutes someone (Sewell?) lobbed Gary Sprake who dropped it into the back of the net? I was at that game.

Me too. Yes, it was just a hopeful prod goalwards and Sprake completely ballsed it up.

Decent player the sort who didn't let you down. RIP

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

At the beginning of that season, I wasn't bothered much about going to SP to stand up in the cold for 90 minutes.

I capitulated, and spent 6/- (as I recall) to watch the team that has been part of my life for over 50 years.

One of my mates always mentioned John Saul as a solid performer, and I shall always remember my astonishment that my mate never attempted to pronounce his name correctly.

JS just got on with his job in a fuss free manner and had the position all to himself.

RIP Mr Dependable.

Think I’m correct in saying he was never booked throughout his playing career.
