versus dropping 15 quid at the barber every month, and only looking slightly improved on option A above. And having to listen to a barber's opinions on his holiday plans, the weather, traffic congestion,....generally...... or hear a lecture on the importance of marrying a virgin girl ( Streatham barbers).

A lot of it is common sense and knowing someone with experience in the area helps. Do you need something to be durable? Sometimes buying cheap can actually work out more expensive if you have to replace the item...built in obsolescence matters. Why is something priced as it is?....materials or brand or supply levels. Usually the mid-range has the most competition and hence the best bang per buck.....but that's just a general rule and good research before buying reduces disappointment. Or just subscribe to 'Which'.

Oh yes, the disposal fees will be astronomic- but "cheap at twice the price ,compared to the damage just dumping it at the side of the road will do"! Or maybe not.I might go on dragons den with my new invention, an app that directs you to the road with the least security cameras, street lighting and housing, so you can take your old electric battery and accidently leave it at the side of the road , saving you the disposal fee. By the time everyone has gone electric, there will be a ban coming, and we will be switching to hydrogen or something.

I have worked on several occasions in food factories. I can state that there are many supermarkets who use the same supplier of (pizzas, yogurts, cooking sauces), but just use their own packaging. I can also that that at least one 'top end' supermarket does not conform, and has their own preferred suppliers. There a few food manufacturers who only supply one outlet. Vacuum cleaners. Dyson stole a march on its competitors by using a technique pioneered in factories for the filtration of air. Dyson prices were through the roof, and the bl00dy buggers went and copyrighted something they didn't even 'invent'. Now other manufacturers can use the technique (bagless cyclone), the prices of vacuum cleaners has dropped quite a bit. Go cheap.

Cars. In the mid-market / cheaper ranges a lot of manufacturers have utilised the same design vehicles (to some extent), so a lot of parts are interchangeable. from engines to body panels. which is how it seems for most products. Obviously don't go really cheap, because there's always a reason why things are cut-price. And never buy a Series 1, as there will undoubtedly be a series 2 very soon, which will have all the problems discovered on Series 1 eliminated. Edited by Forest Hillbilly (24 Nov 2021 7.23am)

Designing new cars and tooling up for them is horrendously expensive nowadays which is why manufacturers share design and production facilities. My own BMW was designed alongside Toyota and built in the Steyr Puch factory in Austria as is the Toyota equivalent although both cars are completely different apart from the chassis. Without the shared development and manufacture I doubt whether either car would have been built
