I think the stats are for refugees rather than economic migrants.

They claim refugee status, unfortunately often blatant lies. There are some genuine ones, however.

"Last year Germany had the largest number of asylum applicants in the EU (122,015 applicants)
, while France had 93,475 applicants. In the same period, the UK received the fifth largest number of applicants (36,041) when compared to other countries in the EU (around 7% of the total). This represents the 17th largest intake when measured by head of population, according to UN refugee agency."

France takes in nearly 3 times that of the UK and has a similar population.

France also has twice the land mass of the UK, so population density is wider-spread (in theory). France also has multiple land borders within the EU (and Germany), whilst the UK is an island. Numbers tell part of the story. But Why people are so determined to risk their lives on dingys is key to resolving the problem.

only a small fraction make their way to the UK, the vast majority are settled in continental Europe. The minority that have family or language ties to the UK, head for the UK. Still a tiny fraction compared to the total that migrate to the rest of Europe.

The UK has a larger economy than France, so has the finacial resources to support more immigration. France has double the land mass of the UK but takes in nearly 3 times the number of Asylum seekers, so the UK is still significantly lower on its intake in comparison.

Asylum rather than the illegals President Macron was referencing the other day.

Asylum having a different definition from illegal. It's all about worderies, and the French can be just as tricky as the UK.

I get why the illegal's might be coming to the UK for friends or family, but perhaps family connections would assist a formal application ? Or perhaps they've already been refused.
It just seems incredibly bizarre that people are willing to not only risk death, but pay between £500-£3000 (source: Financial Times 27 november 2021) for the privilege.

And I see why the pregnant woman was one of the ones that perished the other day. Obviously, if she had her kid in the UK, it would give her preferential treatment.

And i read this morning that UK Border Forces are struggling to recruit. Some irony that French fishermen are willing to smash their boats into UK fishing vessels and illegally board them, but the French border Forces won't stop a few people on Dingy's. Perhaps the criminal gangs are more powerful than we think.

I think when the President of France says illegal he doesn't mean legitimate documented asylum seekers.

Makes no difference, all of the numbers point to the fact that the UK takes far, far lower numbers of any type of immigrant than many other continental European countries. The UK should be taking in far more in order to share the burden with the rest of Europe.

Not illegal immigrants over genuine asylum seekers surely?
