Additional....

At The very least Masi should have kept the Lapped cars in play. that would have given Hamilton a chance to defend his position. afterall, he gave himself an advantage througout the whole race. Why should he not have the advantage going into the last Lap?

It's not the only time Masi has pulled this stunt.

At Saudi the previous race he ordered a safety car for a damaged barrier, it hardly looked damaged and we didn't see an actual repair done.

The result, a new set of tyres for Verstappen, just the same.

They fitted the wrong ones, mediums, it didn't work anyway.

As people has said; Just a disgrace of a Race. How this can continue to be called a Sport is beyond me.
It Was the Race director, Masi, who decided who won the race. He disregarded all sporting efforts made and made it about a dramatic ending.

There's so much wrong with this 'sport', but please lets at least learn from it and make it better;

For me the most unjust of it all is the Safety Car rules. Surely now they must change. To have a system that effectively wipes out an advantage fairly gained on a field of sport - because of a completely unrelated incident is as unjust as it comes in sport.

If I had my way, I'd stop all Tyre changes behind a SC, but I get that you need to allow tyre changes under a safety car for safety reasons, but the way it is handled right now is unfair to any driver except the one in last place.
For me, 2 things need to happen to make it a fairer playing field;
1) ALL Cars are allowed to change tyres without penalty (and are able to retain race position behind the SC).
2) SC Release to be staggered to maintain racing distance. This is the Biggy for me. And I dont see why can't implement it (although I see why they won't implement it..) It might mean a bit of new tech to be included to aid release of each car, but it's not like it's unachievable.

Yes, so you'll take away some excitement and entertainment, but that's big price to pay when your talking sport.

The other thing that they can do is go all Touring car or Moto GP. - have 2 (or 3!) shorter races. this will eliminate the strategy element, and make Safety cars less costly to the outcome.

The one thing it can't do is have another season like this year. Brundle said it's the most exciting it's been for 25 years. - but it's engineered excitement at the expense of sporting integrity.

Sums it up perfectly.

Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons.

I don't think that there is anything corrupt or biased about him, I just think his decision making is shocking.

I do believe he calls SC's for safety purposes, but it's the rules on the safety cars that's the problem.
He has pressure to keep the excitement in the sport, but for all the excitement for the last lap scramble yesterday, there was no competition - and in actual fact, there should not have been any competition or excitement. Hamilton's (mostly) sublime work in the preceeding 95% of the Race up until that Incident should have afforded him that luxury.

F1 wanted a 'Made for TV' finish and they manipulated the race to get it.

Indeed they did. It’s no longer a sport, it’s a manufactured ‘show’ similar to WWE.
The eventual winner was decided by the FIA. I’ve loved this sport since I was a kid in the early 70’s but I’m not going to watch it anymore. I think this result discredits the hard work and abilities of both of these top drivers and poor Max will probably always feel this is a hollow victory - which is sad for him.
If I were Lewis I’d step away, look at other codes, try Le Mans and maybe sports cars. The behaviour of Horner and Wolff over this season has been poor.
The outcome here was embarrassing and, in short, in any other race this season or any other season the race would have finished under the safety car.

This is the like the teams at palace being taken of 5 mins before the end of yesterday’s match and, when they were allowed to restart the scores were reset to 0-0 and Everton had changed half of their team.

And that takes nothing from Max. They made some shocking decisions that affected him as well. (Although he did get a ‘win’ for driving 2 laps in Spa - which was also ridiculous).

There are some crazily I'll informed posts on here.

F1 is a sporting competition run over a season of 22 races. It is a team sport and driver's race against each other for the driver's world championship while the constructors challenge for the honour of being most successful.

The sport is the most highly technical in the world in terms of the design, innovation, creativity and construction of high speed missiles driven by young men of indescribable skill, bravery and reaction.

In line with the nature of this very modern sport there are rules in force to ensure drivers are kept safe and constructors don't cheat.

After 21 races we came to the season's finale with two drivers on level peggings. It was inevitable that sparks would fly.

In the final analysis, no rules were broken, the driver's were well within their limits of control, but one team, Red Bull, took a split second decision to change the tyres on their driver's car and Mercedes did not. The net result was that Verstappen was able to snatch a last lap and, well deserved, victory.

He won the race and the World Championship fairly and squarely. Mercedes are a very wealthy German conglomerate and they didn't like losing to a relatively small English racing car manufacturer based in Milton Keynes.

Always good to see the underdog come out on top.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

None more ill-informed as this. Red Bull Racing (RBR) is an Austrian outfit which has it's factory in Milton Keynes. Red Bull GmbH is not a small corporation. Mercedes-Benz F1 also have their factories in the U.K. One in Brackley and the other in Brixworth. Both in Northants.

As for the "no rules were broken", this is disputed. The rules were not applied in accordance to the written regulations. Whilst Masi had the option to allow cars to unlap behind a safety car or not, there is no provision to allow some cars to unlap and others not. Those obliged to unlap should have been given time to join the rear of the safety car train to allow the race to start safely. As this would add another lap, (ie end of the race) he panicked and misapplied the rule. There were three other drivers behind Hamilton who should have had the chance to race the five allowed to unlap, but were denied that by a twisting of the rules. Why were they denied that? Alternatively, he could have red flagged the race with five laps to go, and had a standing restart. That would have been the best outcome in my opinion.

Also the five that did unlap themselves were not lapped by Verstappen, effectively removing any previous advantage from Hamilton and making it a severely one sided final lap. Hamilton lost time passing the cars lapped, Verstappen didn't even have that to bother with that. Almost any other driver would also have passed Hamilton in those circumstances.

Edit: I have no problem that Max is champion. He earned that right by winning more races etc. It is not his fault that he was gifted the win. I'm just saying that F1 has been made a complete and utter farce by the decisions of Michael Masi. Max and Lewis were both on a different level to the rest of the field. And Max will win the championship again if RBR keep the chassis designer (Newey) and have a decent engine.

I'm with you Tim.
And would add that the Rules that "weren't broken" are "broken rules" - that is to say they need fixing to make the sport fairer.

Hamilton didn't pit on both occasions Verstappen did because it would have been a HUGE disadvantage to him to do so.

I distinctly heard Verstappens 5 point penalty being 'negotiated' by Masi with Red Bull - have you ever heard of such a thing?

After overtaking Hamilton Max swerved from left to right in front of him - that is against the rules (the real ones) usually 5 points not here though.

Hamilton did not need to pit - he had 12 points and only a couple of laps to do on the tyres.

At least that's what he thought - and any logical person would.

Any restart must recognise the advantage he had gained by his driving, or what is the point of 95% of the race.

Other drivers are all quite stunned by it.

A bad day for F1 it looks, and is, ridiculous.

'Don't like the look of those tyres Max - pop in for a new set on the house'.
