Also, I thought Verstappen overtook Hamilton behind the safety car. Certainly from the video.

But, just to say that Mercedes have far more history and technical expertise behind them than Red Bull Racing and they are much wealthier. Merc have been involved in F1 on and off since the series began in 1954 and they are second only to Ferrari in team value. It's true that Red Bull are partly financed by the energy drinks firm, but the team's origins and value are far more modest. They were started in the same factory in MK by Jackie Stewart in the late 90s and have been through different identities, including Jaguar F1, until the Austrian company rescued them. It still seems to me a bit like a David vs Goliath situation and although the way this year’s Championship ended was disappointing, the outcome is probably good for the sport in the longer term.

I agree with you steeleye about how the outcome was arrived at. It was farcical and it made F1 look like an amateur production. My contention is that Hamilton and Mercedes have dominated for 8 years, including this year as Constructors, and it is refreshing to see Verstappen with Red Bull dent their armour and their arrogant attitude. A whole lot of changes next year so it'll be interesting to see how that pans out.

To reset F1 again and repair the damage? Max and Lewis to share the championship, the race null and void. Masi removed forthwith. A full review of the rules with independent audit before next season.

You lose all the time advantage over your pursuers. $hlt happens ---------------------- It's going to be hard to make any point as eloquently as this but here goes. The trouble is that's not what always happens. Here is a quote from the BBC F1 website: "In 2020, there was a safety-car period during the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. Both Hamilton and Verstappen complained it had been unnecessarily long. Masi was asked about this after the race. He said: "There's a requirement in the sporting regulations to wave all the lapped cars past." Masi acted completely differently last weekend. It seems to me that he made a conscious decision to "even" the race up. Hamilton had used up valuable time getting past the 4 lapped cars between him and Verstappen. They were simply removed from Verstappens way without any time cost to him. There was still a lapped car between Verstappen and Sainz in 3rd place which was not waved through. This hampered Sainz in any attempt he might have made to catch Verstappen. A clear indication of the way the drivers were treated differently and again a total contracdiction of Masi's own explanation of safety car rules. By his own admission, all lapped cars should have been waved though. This would probably have meant the race finished under the safety car. Not ideal of course but just because you don't like the outcome of applying the rules, you can't change them on the fly. I get why people may not like Hamilton but "sh1t happens" is a lame excuse for the way that he was clearly and unfairly disadvantaged by the Race Director. The evidence is there in Masi's own words. If F1 wants to continue to claim that it is a sport then it needs to apply it's own rules fairly and consistently. They can't rerun the race but maybe could admit their error and declare that in these unprecedented circumstances it is a shared championship for this season. Both drivers are worthy champions - why not let them share it for this year? That would also set up next year really well. Seems like a win win to me.
