I think that the preparation has much to do with our appalling batting too as half of the squad has only been playing 20/20 cricket recently whilst the other half haven't played any cricket at all as the warm up matches were rained off

If the test team could manage to hit an average 20/20 score it would help a little.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

Can't see Root continuing as captain myself.

He's the figurehead for this team and it isn't change if he continues to lead the new one.

Once this tour is over I see Stokes taking temporary leadership until a new kingpin emerges.

He surely has to step down. Clearly no one even wanted to bat. I hardly think 267 is an innings winning score, even with the pitch doctoring. England had to contrive to lose like that. Clear message 'I don't want to be here'.

Clearly not working. Been coming for a while in the Test Side not just the latest fiasco. Change of Management & whilst Root is a great batsman not the most inspirational skipper he must step down.
Another huge factor was the preparation. Why no warm up games? Two weeks to acclimatise with no proper games, some of the players no competitive cricket for 2 months, hardly surprising our batting was cr@p.

There's a lot that can be said to how a team can mentally become like that....There certainly isn't a lot of Boycott out there....but then again the Boycotts aren't being forged anymore....nor Gowers for that matter.

Anyway at least some are identifying the most obvious problem....that four day cricket has been sidelined. All this is so predictable you wonder how people take home the large pay packets....then again, that's precisely why....it's because they chase the money and not the actual point of English cricket in the first place.

Whilst I know it would never happen - if Joe Root rang the head of the selectors during the day today & told them, that's it I want to stand down as England Test Captain, who would you go for to either step up from the existing group out there or who would you fly out to take charge of the remaining 2 tests ?

Stokes would certainly command the dressing room -
I think my only reservation would be that I wouldn't want being Captain to detract from his all round game -

Sure, but he's hardly pulling up trees as it is....perhaps it'll have the opposite effect.

I'd still fancy England at home v Australia in the summer.

Last time 2-2 and excellent fare it was.

This Ashes series was never going to work.

Reminds me of 2006 when Vaughan lost 5-0, the haste and lack of preparation, add to it the covid uncertainties must be affecting the players.

The ECB, the PL and Formula 1 are not sporting organisations imo, but financial ones, for them it's the cheque book.

And much maligned Root is actually our most successful captain, passed Cook some time ago and Vaughan this year.
