If seemingly we are going to have a different variant every few months we need to just get on with it, making sure the weak & vulnerable are protected whilst the rest of us get on with it.
Something they seem to be doing ok at in Arkansas, Texas & Florida & not so well in Democratic states such as New Jersey, New York & California where they've locked up everything & achieved little in real terms.
It looks like NYCs new mayor is already thinking along these lines as is the (Newish stand in Governor)

Yes, I can see how it could all get a bit dystopian with a future where we're all living in little boxes plugged up to a virtual world, and that even the virtual house is kind of s***ty because we don't have enough tokens or something . They'll probably even throw a virtual covid in the mix. Can't have us getting away from it that easily!

In a few months the situation may well be very different. Once some level of herd immunity has been established, through vaccination and infections, then we can start to relax things again, especially in the warmer weather. I think hospitals will have to continue avoiding an infected staff member being in direct contact with the vulnerable. So how they are managing will still be the barometer which determines how quickly things change.
