An interesting thought Stirling - one that has just made me chuckle loudly!

After Suez in 1956 the English and French governments destroyed the evidence, which probably explains why you don't see much newsreel etc.

The cabinet secretary burnt everything in the grate at 10 Downing Street, it must have kept the place warm for weeks.

Beats burning a memo, Mrs May preferred the shredder.

When the American embassy was under siege in Iran In 1979 they shredded everything they could before being captured. The Iranians brought in some Persian carpet makers who put the documents back together without too much trouble.

Not when that memo could indict him! Wonder if you would be so generous if it had been a Tory PM in same circumstances?

Her Majesty probably has a high regard for Tony B after his wise counsel over Diana's death, really he saved the day for the monarchy.

Otherwise they would have skulked at Balmoral.

TB an excellent PM.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

Not unusually for a piece from the agenda driven, sensationalist, Daily Mail, the headlines and first paragraphs rely on the probability that most readers won't study the detail, understand it, or even read their own piece to the end.

That the advice from the AJ on the legality of us joining the Americans was complicated, mixed and borderline is well known, and was when it was given. That's nothing new. Nor, I suspect, is it so unusual in such circumstances for a "for your eyes only" communication to be expected to be destroyed after reading, to ensure it did not reach other eyes.

It was my understanding at the time that Blair was trying to reign back Bush and get him to adopt another strategy. Which is why it went to the UN. It is also my belief that a secret agreement was reached between Churchill and Roosevelt when the USA joined us in WW2, that committed the UK to supporting the USA, when requested to, in its military endeavours in specific areas of mutually shared interest. Including the Middle East.

If true, and it's only a hunch based on observation, then Blair was between a rock and a hard place.

Possibly a generous take who knows, but I hope you're right. I don't like to think that we may have been unnecessarily dragged to the forefront of such a horrible chapter in history. I don't have much time for the man myself, when push came to shove it just seemed to be all about him.
