Nowhere near mobile enough to play midfield - if I'm honest, for all of his good points, he's barely mobile enough to play centre-half!

I like Andersen and was very pleased we signed him. I agree he most certainly is not a DM. He obviously needs a CB partner who is quick to play alongside him. Has limitations but think he is an upgrade on others we have (except Guehu)

Our whole style of play is based around us having two centre backs that are comfortable on the ball, able to bring the ball out of defence and pass through the lines.

Guehi is superb at carrying the ball out from the back and Andersen is superb at playing through balls and switching the play quickly and accurately.

Tomkins is probably better defensively in terms of positioning and reading the game, but we saw how him being there when Andersen was injured, that it slowed our play down, limited our ability to switch from passing it around at the back to then going more direct and put a greater onus on the midfield to be the creative force and drop deeper to carry the ball out.

We no longer sit deep and invite pressure on to us, which meant we were all about having solid defenders who's jobs were to just defend.

We now press high, try and win the ball back ASAP from the front. Our defence will always need to defend, but it's now about having defenders who can play and build from the back with a focus on the whole team defending and retaining possession.

Even our 'defensive midfielder' isn't a defensive midfielder in the traditional sense. They are there to play that Pirlo type role, not your Vinny Jones or Gattuso who just shield the defence.

It also rarely works when you try something like this too. David Luiz was tried out there a few times and it just led to him getting sent off even sooner than he normally would at CB!

Oh definitely agree - he's got the best distribution of any centre half I've ever seen at Palace and absolutely an upgrade on the old guard of centre halves we'd built up.

But he is incredibly slow and there's already been a couple of examples of poor defensive play costing us - in terms of pure defending, I think Tomkins is a safer pair of hands, but the rest of what Andersen offers makes him a better player.

Guehi is the real superstar of the two - an absolute Rolls Royce, destined for top level football sooner rather than later I expect. I don't think we'll have him long.

I concur with these sentiments.

I accept that Andersen is a ball-playing central defender who can spray passes around to good effect but his sheer lack of pace is alarming and his mobility on the turn is called into question.
He was Lyon's record signing but a year later they were content to loan him to Fulham for a loan fee of £900K with an option to buy.

As we discovered when he was paired with Tomkins and we got stuffed by the Spuds.

I try to ignore your frequent posts, but it is difficult when almost each post you do make marks you out as a div.

For anyone new to communication on the internet, see above. Yes, I know, it is a bit isn't it?

On the original suggestion, the same thought had crossed my mind but I feel Andersen will lack the mobility for the position, and that his long passing range would, if anything, become less of a weapon if he plays in midfield.

When we play the ball around the edge of our box not only does Andersen get more time and space than he would in midfield, but the opponent is more likely to have pressed up the pitch a bit, creating space for the long pass.

That said, wasn't there some talk that he played in midfield in the past?

I think this could work well as DM good passer an captain material, Tomkins or even Kouyate and Guehi as CD, leaves Hughes, Gallagher and McArthur to get forward more, certainly better than Luka

He's got the attributes but the pace and mobility, for me he's coming up short at centre back because of it.

I think he would be best suited playing in a back 3, with two mobile partners to cover him - it's a shame we don't have the wing-backs to make a system of that sort effective yet.

Medium term, I think both Andersen and Guehi would benefit from a 3 at the back system - we'd have to recruit to make it work though.
