The best player I've seen in a Palace shirt since Lombardo but constantly let down his poor temperament.

He is so easy to wind up that opposition players regularly target him and people like James Ward-Prowse always seem to succeed. Frankly it's a surprise that he hasn't missed more games for us due to suspension over the years.

My love for Wilf has dwindled over the past two years. Aside from his attitude on the pitch, the manner in which he has tried to engineer a move out of the club in more than one transfer window, especially handing in a transfer request a couple of days before the season, left a very bitter taste in my mouth.

There is also the question of his performances. His end product has improved in recent years and he is on course to reach double figures in goals for the third time in four seasons. However, he is clearly less dynamic and menacing on the pitch these days. He's lost pace and doesn't terrify defenders in the same way anymore or play with the same joie de vivre.

We used to be so one-dimensional that other teams could stop us if they stopped him so regularly doubled up on him. I always felt that in a better team with more talented players he would thrive on more space. However, that's exactly what we have this season and he hasn't improved in my opinion. I'm not sure I'd even have him in my top five players of the season so far.

He's not justifying his salary at the moment and for the first time in years we have other options. Eze, Rak-Sakyo and Olise are all young and talented alternatives. He either signs a new contract and sorts his head out or we sell him for £30-40 million and try to reinvest it as we did in the summer.

I like a lot of older Palace fans have watched Wilf for years. This aggressive streak he possesses served him well when he was younger, but it has now almost turned into an aggressive form of anger he cannot control. As its been pointed out the best players around the world get fouled all the time but the just get up and get on with it!
Opposition teams know that by winding him up through constant rotational fouling and his own moaning to the referee, stokes the fire within him and anger levels during each game.
I cannot believe that Wilf or the club have not sort help through types of counselling, anger management treatment, cognitive behavioural therapies, psychodynamic psychotherapy, or transpersonal therapy.
He could have started with something as simple as yoga (but the squad might do this anyway.) Meditation, group coping & reflection sessions etc years ago.
I am no specialist but like a lot of supporters we can all see that the explosive petulance that is shown on the field during matches is detracting from the real player we know still exists in that frame, it’s just the mind at times lets him the club and us down and it’s happening more often.
Which for a player of his undoubted skill, calibre and experience just shouldn’t be happening at all!!!

Plaistow Eagle's post says it all for me.

I would play through balls to him and get him running down the wing. That's where he is best. If he can't out pace the defenders when he is in full flight, then he should probably move on, but he will.
But above all he has got to stop ALL the histrionics, the wide eyes, the fake laugh. Sitting on the ground pleading with the refs, everyones fed up with it. Just become a robot like all top players try to do. Focus on the gsme not the emotion.
If not, his time will soon be done.

good post... a younger Wilf had passion desire... an older Wilf has seen that turn to frustration and arrogance. In my opinion.

A great player, but only ever made it at palace, particulary when we were in the champ... in the prem, he was a miss at united and cardiff, he came back to us, was our main player and worshiped and played well, then his head was turned, he got older and lost half a yard and the ship has sailed...

I can see him finishing his career in the states...

I haven’t posted on this topic until now..!!

I was furious after his sending off against Spurs - up until that moment we were at least holding our own - if not arguably the better, more likely team..!!

Zaha’s sending off changed all that and from thereon in we were on the back foot..!!

Zaha is so infuriating at 29 he seems to me more petulant than when he was younger - at a stage in his career when you’d expect him to be taking the mantle as a more senior player and leading by example - he seems to be going the other way..!!

I do honestly wonder whether some of the/his frustration is around that he is no longer “King of the Palace” - younger players are now better than him and there’s no doubt he’s lost a yard of pace.

Additionally I believe he’s now realised that he’s big money move to a “Champions League” club ain’t going to happen. Why is that the case - well Wilf you only need to watch your performance against Spurs - then stand in front of a mirror - then you’ll know the answer - you’ve got to grow up..!!

But and this a big but and why I took a mental walk around the block on this - he is still a Palace legend and in my time up there alongside Sansom and Wright as the best players I’ve seen in a Palace shirt..!!

LBH - without Zaha we would have been relegated a good few seasons ago..!!

So for me Zaha is at a crossroad in his career - he either buys into the Viera revolution and accepts he is no longer “kingpin” - but enjoys playing in a much progressive team and grasps the opportunity to lead by example - or he continues in this petulant manner until such time Viera says enough is enough and sells to the highest bidder - where if he continues in the same vane he’s career will just drift into obscurity..!!

For me Zaha has still a lot of credit in the bank - and a fully focused Zaha is still one of the first names on the team sheet from our fully fit squad - but for that to remain he has got to do something he hasn’t done to date - grow up..!!

Only time will tell..

Surely you forgot to add Lombardo to this esteemed list.

Would you care to elaborate on that clearly erudite comment?

You obviously feel that getting sent off is beneficial to the team. You people living in Cornwall are frankly strange. Is there something in the water?

Totally agree and judging by the vast majority of comments on this thread alone you are right.

No exciting news from afcon, apart from ivory coast winning without Wilf, who is apparently considering retiring from international football...? So is he in Africa or Purley...?

This thread is mental - we've got some absolute pant-wetters as fans.

The talk of Wilf 'never being that good' or not being good enough now is demonstrably untrue - to provide some objective figures;

- Best shot conversion rate in our squad and our 2nd top scorer

- Progressive dribbling averaging 133 yards per 90, which is more than the vast majority of wingers in the division. Ayew (who we'd all agree is in the form of his life) is averaging 144 yards per 90.

- 22 chances created from open play; most in the squad

On what planet is statistically our best finisher and best chance creator not good enough to play?

The Ayew point is also telling in terms of expectation; he's not scoring or creating as much as Wilf, but we all agree he's been superb... Wilf is measured by a different standard.
