the camera on top of your home computer.

the microphone on your 'Alexa' device

every time you pay with a credit card

its worrying when cyberspace knows more about yourself than you do.

And certainly knows more about your nearest & dearest than you do.

indeed, but you have to put some thought into using cash. do you use a bank account ? how do you withdraw the cash, machine , teller, an.other ? Most transactions are traceable (eventually) , and that is why drug dealers have to repay ill-gotten gains which are quantified.

We are powerless precisely because those that hold real power are only really interested in expanding it. Their ability to do that has been significantly aided by technology and the growing better ability to shape mass communication to the exclusion of alternatives.

The Internet has been a challenge to that but is slowly being turned into the same tool of control.

Capital runs the west....the party runs China. Wouldn't it be great if we could have a system where people had more power over their own lives.

i think covid gave people the opportunity to think about some things, whilst the Government was busy implementing 'stuff'.
Take the car. The symbol of freedom. but actually, it can act more like a shackle. Direct debits on insurance , road tax, a yearly MOT to monitor the mileage and condition of a car, taxes on fuel , insurance and spare parts. Garage maintenance adds to the cost, but is also another way of auditing the vehicle.
(feeling it yet ?)
Then the CCTV cameras on the road/motorways, automated vehicle reg plate cameras in car parks. Tracker devices in company HGV's, buses and the like.

One of the greatest symbols of freedom has you shackled financially and completely traceable almost all the time. (except drivers of White Fiat Uno's, obviously) ((Lady Diana's car crash))

When I was young the males in the family would have regular discussions about the best routes to take to get from one location to another.....They loved everything around and associated with driving.

While I obviously drive all that stuff just passed me by....I'm just a simple A to B driver and I never caught that bug.

But yeah....it isn't cheap, just like everything else nowadays.

I wud say the opposite to 1984 is brave new world, and i wud definitely prefer that, lord of the flies is a great idea for a book but not a very good book and the two films of it were utter s***e and the b&w version is meant to be a classic - never been a good film based on brave new world, can't think why, there jolly well should be one.

The world depicted in 1984 is a Utopia compared to the Arthur Waite.

Exactly. Those of us who are obsessed with 'pure freedom' should just stick to reading Voltaire to console themselves

Once all credit is online and cash isn't a thing just how long do you think it'll be until the state decide what you can and can't buy.

All your transactions will be viewable and controllable. In a world where your leaders are always benevolent perhaps it's less worrisome. However, I think it's sensible not to view this as desirable.
