Apart from seniority I don't know why Benteke was on for Mateta.

Because he's a superior player.

Happened to be in the right place at the right though for our goal. He may be clumsy but if Vieira and his experienced coaching staff believe he should be playing then I will bow to them.

Oh totally. Look, I'm not claiming to know more than our coaching team. I'll always support their decisions. I'm merely commenting from what I've seen of him, which is all we can do right?

I personally wouldn't mind keeping him around as a third option...might offer us something different. But he's far inferior to Eduoard, Benteke and even Ayew as a striker imo.

Mateta is barely championship level. I'd rather have Sanogo back.

Remind us how many Sanogo scored for us?

Mateta showed again why he is starting now ahead of the likes of Benteke, gets in some good positions works hard and runs well off the ball.

Benteke on the the other hand can head the ball….that’s about it.

Mateta has positional sense, awareness in the box, good movement, if Gallagher had missed his header, Mateta was in perfect place to finish, Vieira sees him as Number 1 CF, that's why he started and Benteke didn't, the first thing Benteke did when he came on was get caught offside, again, are you in love with Benteke.

He isn't even good at heading just jumping, he has missed some howlers in the air already this season, he wins the header but has no control where it ends up

The one thing I have noticed about about Mateta is that he seems to have struck up some sort of partnership understanding with Eduoard, one which can only grow the longer they play together. I never witnessed this with Benteke, who more often than not is off the pace, doesn't make the run, or anticipate the pass.

If we are going to buy him I would buy him now . There is a lot to be said for knowing where you are going to be for the next 3 -4 years

And we still need a striker

Yesterday Mateta showed us the power and wisdom of our management /coaching team. He is improving fast. For 20 minutes he and Edouard supported by Olise and Sclupp had Liverpool on the ropes. We were all over them.
Admittedly in the first half Liverpool showed us why they are top 3. They were so good we deserved credit just for hanging on. Which we did.
Then the unbelievable happened. We changed our format and within minutes of the second half had 3 clear chances. It was like Brazil of the seventies had turned up.
Mateta Schluppie Edouard started to really play. Supported by Gallagher Olise and Hughes we actually outplayed them.
Hughes hurt his foot and had to go but I was surprised to see Benteke replace Mateta. Maybe he was done.
But the guy is improving no end. Some of his touches were very good. Plus he has a big presence which he is starting to use.
I just wish Benteke was more daring in every department. He still seems to lack belief, which Mateta doesn’t.

Did you see When he was substituted, Vieira gave him extra congrats,

This !

This for me is the main reason, JPM has self belief, that backheel v Brighton alone is all the evidence needed plus the fact he has and sticks to his signature individual celebration ! (Anyone who wants to mention Benteke's just remember he copied that off LeBron James of the NBA)

That's been the Benteke problem all along, we've been patient and given him plenty of time and patience in the hopes we'd see the Villa Benteke again but it just hasn't and now likely isn't going to happen, at 31 there's little scope for Benteke to improve but every chance JPM can as he's still developing !

Plus JPM has much more confidence with the ball at his feet too, he's worth the punt imo.
