The huge cynicism demonstrated above is only topped by the ability to try to link it to the grooming gang scandal and "Asian" votes, which is as ridiculous as it is creative.

Not sure about that. Branding is pretty important - people will queue round the block for some companies offerings no matter what they are so the trick is to convince people to buy what they don’t actually want or need.

Brands build trust. That's marketing, not selling. What you describe is confidence trickery.

I buy on quality and value. Working for so long in the food industry allowed me to know who made what for whom. Many recipes are identical, or slightly tweaked. Only the packaging is really any different, although many consumers refuse to believe it. Own label is now so well entrenched that in many cases the biggest selling brand is now an own label. The biggest selling baked beans, for instance, isn't Heinz, it's Tesco. You pay a lot more to support the brand awareness of Heinz though.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

Fair enough but there’s no created cultural cachet to a tin of beans.

You know full well that advertising is about influence. Identifying a need is a different aspect altogether.
A company does not expect anyone to buy a product purely on the basis of an advertisement, they just want to make their brand familiar and appealing so that when you are in the market, you think of them.
Image is now everything, and the young suck up token political mumbo jumbo because they are gullible.
Wokenes is the current Zeitgeist.

It’s been known for a long time too. Vance Packard’s 1957 book about advertising was called The Hidden Persuaders.
Social media “influencers” are thought to have a 15 billion dollar effect on the economy.

Watch "Century of the Self" and "The Power of Nightmares" - we have literally been manipulated for decades and not just into buying things.
