an unmitigated failure & his gross negligence in the way he handled the Afghan exit is unforgiveable.

I'm very much against the Online Harms Bill and also the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. They are both textbook examples of playing the left and right against one another. The former likely has more support on the left on grounds of 'offense' (though I can think of angles to get elements of the right on board too), and with the latter when I was criticising the reaction to the 'Kill the Bill' protests on here etc it's easy to see a lack of support for expressions or rights that can be portrayed for relating to 'others'.

As much as moderates are easy to attack, it's hard to deny that a wider coalition is needed to counter such changes in the law, and that people drifting towards clan mentally on the left and right, are self comforting and just end up with a chocolate box in their basket that disappears once they arrive at checkout. The more people politically drift, the less there is any chance of a coming together on grounds that are mutually beneficial rather than moving more control into the hands of government.

I think we are already in a place where the state can manipulate and essentially do what they want with who they want. Laws are made and adjusted with such flexibility in mind that it just comes down to who the person is that interprets.

Usually the main opposition to bills like this would come from the opposition in parliament, whereas the opposition here actually wants even less liberties.

We are moving towards a state which relies upon manufactured consent.....After being able to control what is said at the point of a jail cell how long is it before they control what you can buy once it's all digital? It's not as those it's a secret.

I agree with you that there needs to be coalitions against the manifestations of Orwell's warnings. Still, unfortunately I don't think that will happen.

Yes, indeed, i fear they can do anything to us and we will just shrug shoulders and take it, everybody will have to take loans imposed on us by the government to pay our bills, but loans are loans so will have to be paid back-eating away any savings or quality of life in the future! Im looking forward to it, we voted for it so lets suck it up!

More weasel-words from Biden over Ukraine, he epitomises the weakness of the west as Putin saw all too clearly last year over the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

He is doing sweet FA to help Ukraine, just like the rest of the west.

The only thing that unites them is issuing sanctions like the Met dishing out fixed penalty notices.

Putin knows that they will avoid getting their hands dirty.

That is plain silly, the Russians are fed lies through strict censorship. You need to follow the news more fully and think things through.

I see your grasp on logic is on par with Stirling’s then.

No he didn't, it was stupid.

Literal propaganda that the Russians can dine out on for years. They will play that clip to their populations for years as enforcement to their message that, 'the west hates us', along with the sanctions it's gold for them.....the guy already has poll support that's higher since the war.

Do you trust any polling done in Russia? I wouldn't even if it was done independently by a respectable western pollster. People would be too scared to say the truth.

Getting the message out that the west wants Putin gone might not be as stupid as everyone seems to think. They are already told to hate us. Being told it's Putin, not them, that's the problem may just raise some questions. Especially if he has to back track on his original objectives, and then the soldiers come home with their stories.

I'm not saying this is necessarily the case, only that it could all be a "cunning plan"!

In such a depressing situation, I must say Steeley's position shift still managed to lighten the mood. In a world where people perhaps become too entrenched and set, to witness a dramatic about turn of this magnitude was an inexplicable joy!

It goes without saying that I'm very much against censorship and political persecution (but you aren't) Still do you think it's so bad in Russia that just giving a negative view on how well you think Putin is doing leads to a prison sentence?......I think if it were that bad then it would be like a North Korean poll where you essentially get 99 percent in favour of the state position. I think the security services in Russia are more focused upon activism.....But rightly we are all against that.

All I know is that Putin's ratings have gone up since the war began. That's not surprising as that's genuinely what happens. Also sanctions aren't going to make the west popular are they? That creates a 'them and us' situation which reinforces the Russian media propaganda.....Russians have been fed exactly the same 'anti' propaganda that the west have been fed about them....God knows how many Hollywood movies have had Russian baddies in them.

So you think the Russian media allow that kind of perspective?

Besides the people who suffer from sanctions are their audience.....when you hit someone in the face and tell them that you're not really hitting them but their boss....it kind of doesn't work.

I get the impression that you think Putin being turned over is a realistic outcome. I just don't know where you get that idea from.

I said from the outset that a cold war is a disaster....personally I don't think you quite realise just how negative this is on several fronts.

I think what you are starting to see the rhetoric change in the west, especially with the recognition that peace terms need as much encouragement as possible.

That just one of the reasons why Biden's 'regime change' type ad lib is damaging. It deepens an already bad situation. He's been ridiculous on Russia for years now and I just don't see Putin dealing with the US while he's in office. That restricts options considerably.

I have my fingers crossed for a peace deal soon and after the Democrats get their arses kicked in November I don't see Biden staying on.

Perhaps then a new adult's voice in the president's chair can try to repair some of the damage done.
