They should have hired The Rock instead of Chris. He might have reacted differently.

Should have them both next year. The two Rocks. Chris needs protection!

If there were less toxic masculinity and more trans inclusivity at the Oscars then none of this would have happened.

Aren't there enough people in dreadful frocks already?

Chris Rock got slapped but the real slapper...Amy Schumer was hosting.

She's been rocked back and forth more often than her car's windscreen wiper.

I have no idea why you are all fixated on the 'open marriage' angle of this. The jibe at Will Smith's wife was, "I can't wait for G.I.Jane two", (G.I.Jane had Demi Moore featured with a shaved head). This was a reference to her alopecia. A condition which she clearly has no control over. It's about the same level of bullying you get in the school playground. Any man or woman should quite rightly stand up and defend their partner, or any person, with a condition or disability. I'm not condoning the slap to the face (I'd have done worse), but to trivialise it as being about an 'open marriage' beggars belief.

Read the thread, it's discussed.

Also, this isn't an ultra serious thread.

Nobody has said that Chris Rock said anything about open marriage. It simply offered context to why Will Smith may have acted is such erratic and violent fashion on live TV, considering the other public humiliations he has laughed off. It's a subjective point of view, so there's little point is going over that again really .

As for the incident, Chris Rock is a comedian, and the job of a comedian is often to poke fun. That's relevant context. There were numerous jokes at this ceremony that could be deemed 'offensive', but it's hardly justification for lamping those making them. And it was about 1% the level of Ricky Gervais' scathing attacks during the Golden Globes. Do you want a series of people to physically attack him too based on what they are each individually offended by?

While certainly there are jokes that can be said to be in extremely bad taste (take Frankie Boyles repeated attacks on Katie Prices disabled child for instance) ultimately this was a relatively tame joke about someones hair (of lack therefore of). I mean, you're a fan of more full on humour than Chris Rock surely? Is it wrong to attack those comedians just because you personally enjoy their comedy?

By all means if she or others wish to be angry about that joke, that's fine. Boycott the show, change the channel. But there is little excuse for physically assaulting a comedian for making a joke. Will Smiths behaviour was completely out of order, and his Oscar speech a narcissistic justification of violence.

Honestly, with all talk of defending freedom of speech and it being encroached on by governments (which is a very rare points) are people now seriously saying that it's fine to punch a comedian on the stage every time they say a joke you don't like?

I read it. And I get it's not ultra serious. That's why I commented. It wasn't discussed at all, someone, (you I think?), mentioned that she could have worn a wig if it bothered her. Nothing at all was mentioned of her alopecia. It was a joke in extremely bad taste. I'm all for taking the mick out of stereotypes, but crossing the line into areas which the individual has no control over is not on.

I don't particularaly like Will Smith, in fact I'd say that I avoid his movies, but he had every right to stand up for his wife. She was being made the butt of a joke for no other reason than she has alopecia.

Ricky Gervais Hosting Golden Globes 2016 - [Link] etc

Will Smith slapping a diminutive figure is itself a (very literal) act of 'punching down' . I very much doubt he'd have done the same to Ricky Gervais.. or if he had I expect his 'Hollywood Smile' might have looked a little different afterwards.

Exactly, you all just speculated. Making up stuff again BJ? Also, did Ricky Gervais poke fun of disabled or afflicted people during his ceremonies? It's a different league to this idiot.

Keep your hair on!

Crossing the.... hair line?

An entitled multi millionaire with an Oscar winning husband, having a lighthearted joke made about her (lack of) hair at a back patting awards ceremony. Can't have that can we. Let's start slapping people for their comedic sins.

Haven't you said you're a fan of Jim Davidson? Fair play, but I mean, I'm pretty sure he made jokes somewhat more pointed than scathing follicle based humour. I know lots in life is up for debate, but are we seriously saying that physically assaulting comedians on stage every time they make a joke you don't like is an acceptable way to behave?

Quote Also, did Ricky Gervais poke fun of disabled or afflicted people during his ceremonies? It's a different league to this idiot.

Who knows, he made very pointed and undiluted jokes on many areas (a joke about someone who was run over for instance). You don't get to set a level of comedy that violence is an acceptable response to - because it simply shouldn't happen.

You pal Jim has made numerous disabled jokes and crass comments over the years [Link] . I don't have to be a fan of them or him but I'm not advocating for people to attack him for his jokes.

That said, you could always slap his wife instead and he might even join you (that's a joke too! Jim Davidson doesn't slap his wife.. just one of the previous ones.)

That was a joke too by the way.

Maybe.

And that.
