Wow - if the only link is the possibility of Jamaican Cotton being used in a factory that he worked in growing up then you might as well submit a cancelling order on the entire past of just about everyone.

Exactly TE, the mere suggestion from the Glasgow council slavery audit that he should be cancelled for having a connection to slavery because the mill he worked in as a child may have used Jamaican cotton is beyond belief.

Good to see the taxpayers of Glasgow getting good value for money.

85 members elected (STV): 39 SNP; 31 Labour; 8 Conservative; 7 Scottish Green

This is what the future of Scotland would look like with an SNP government. Bunch of champagne marxists funded by the taxpayer

Most people treat public statues like a lamp post

Generally they are irrelevant

A few however do carry some nasty connotations. I would not be happy to look up, for example, to an effigy of Mussolini were it to live in Predappio. Especially if my parents were Ethiopian.

According to most Egyptologists and based on the huge amount of written evidence , yes. A mixture of highly skilled artisans and labourers, paid works and also considered a form of public service to honour the living gods.

I was not there so this is based on what I have read or seen on documentaries etc

What I heard too. Agriculture was seasonal due to the flood patterns of the Nile. So there were long periods in a year when folk had little to do save devote their time to working for the Gods

I'm not happy to have a statue of racist, terrorist, murderer, John Chilembwe, on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

The problem is that our statues are representative of our culture and history.
Irrespective of what they did or didn't do, it is not for newcomers to tell us what statues to retain or for our democratically elected representatives to pander to minorities.

If they don't like Britain, and it's history, thy should go and live somewhere else.

allow statues of all the baddies to be in our towns ? well , yes we do have Oliver Cromwell , the butcher of Drogheda. Standing proud at Westminster.

so what is next ? Hitler & Stalin ?

maybe we should keep Cromwell but allow Gerry Adams a statue nearby ?

so the people in Newry should leave the UK ? well they were trying to do so for a long time.

One reason the rest of the Planet invaded Britain was that they were only 'returning the compliment'. Its a bit rich telling a fella from India/pakistan that he has no business being in the UK - after the whole place got trashed by the Brits partition in 1947.

Vespasian must be furious. We murdered his legacy, his name, his brand. And so little gratitude after the fecker paid for the whole shebang.

The original poster may not be aware but Glasgow has a complex relationship with slavery; indeed Glasgow University recognises that whilst it never enslaved people or traded in slaves, it did receive significant financial support from people whose wealth came from slavery. The university has stated that it regrets this historic association with slavery and as a result created a centre for the study of slavery and a memorial at the university for the enslaved.

To me, there response was admirable - recognise the past but put the focus on education and the enslaved.

In passing, I wonder if anyone on here has ever been to Goree - an island very close to Dakar in Senegal where one Patrick Vieira comes from. It was the largest slave trading centre in Africa for 5 centuries and is now a world heritage site reminding the world of human exploitation and acting as a sanctuary for recognition. It is a thoroughly sobering experience so well worth a visit.

It's easy to virtue signal if it doesn't cost you.

If people actually cared about exploitation most of them wouldn't own a mobile phone or buy cheap clothes or many other things they do that they view their considered right and entitlement.

We should keep the Cromwell statue as he was an illustrious figure from England's fairly distant past. We should not have a statue of Adams as he is an Irish terrorist and an enemy of England.
