The problem is that our statues are representative of our culture and history.
Irrespective of what they did or didn't do, it is not for newcomers to tell us what statues to retain or for our democratically elected representatives to pander to minorities.

If they don't like Britain, and it's history, thy should go and live somewhere else.

Who is a newcomer? Do you mean young British people? True, how dare they take responsibility for the future of their country.

So sad to see history brought down innit

Yes, the parallels between someone who was anti-slavery and a murderous dictator are obvious.

Before the Marxists invaded the educational institutions our young people didn't believe this myopic crap.

There is a certain percent of non Europeans or citizens of nowhere who always work against the host culture because that's their default inclination.

When the host nation gives them a privileged position in terms of status and remuneration they use that to work against the very hand that fed them.

This isn't new knowledge, many other countries around the world don't allow this to happen precisely because it's not new.

But take over the higher level educational systems and you rot the core from within.

There isn't one.

If you read Marx he has a lot of accurate criticisms of capitalism but he's light on solutions and all those that interpreted solutions ended up being worse than what they replaced.

Communism doesn't work because it's anti human nature. All political and economic systems are subverted because power and money will always result in self interest. It's a matter of looking for the least worse example.

I don't believe in personal religions of course but one of its positives is that it introduces certain ethics that discourage negative behaviours that are bad for the collective group like lying, stealing, general corruption and so on. Remove that and it's the domain of self justified behaviours.....and people will always justify what benefits them.

I have not mentioned any specific statue

My point is a general one

However, perhaps you could look specifically at Edward Colston's history and confirm that you find him worthy for us all to look up to (literally and figuratively).

Not only is it estimated that the Royal African Company during Colston's involvement with it (from 1680 to 1692) transport over 84,000 African men, women and children to the Caribbean and the rest of the Americas, of whom as many as 19,000 may have died on the journey. Also he gave away some of his shares to William III in order to ensure that trade continued unabated. All this was uncovered in 1920.

I am sure you would say his philanthropy covered for that and anyway we should celebrate our history.

The statue is not destroyed, just not in a place where we are expected to look up to it.

Just off the top of my head I know there is a statue to Shaka Zulu in London....a statue that has no place in England and someone who would have been responsible for countless deaths.

There is a statue to Nelson Mandela, again someone who has no relevance to England and was responsible for terrorism that resulted in deaths.

In England, only those with allegiance to English culture and history should have the right to decide what statues stand here.

Everyone else can do one.

I think we should acknowledge our history if not necessarily celebrate it in every case.
If anyone feels any guilt or responsibility for historical events then it’s theirs to deal with.
I still don’t understand what David Livingstone did that should cause his statue to become contentious.

Statues to Bono and Geldof! Blimey that's like a statue to Pier Morgan here or something.....What an awful thought.

Classic illogicality from you.

In England, only those with a stake in its future should get to make decisions about it and drive its culture forward.

History is there to learn from, not to be an immutable guide for the future. Or are you wedded to AS400s still?

One reason the rest of the Planet invaded Britain was that they were only 'returning the compliment'. Its a bit rich telling a fella from India/pakistan that he has no business being in the UK - after the whole place got trashed by the Brits partition in 1947.

I wouldn't tell an Indian what statue to have in his country if I moved to Deli.

The British didn't divide Muslims and Hindus. They did that themselves. Many Indians are glad of the British influence.
