That's the whole point! Homosexuality was illegal, now it isn't. That battle was won and those previously convicted have been pardoned. Thus, history has been revisited.

If it can be done in one direction, why not the other?

I am not arguing it should be. I am only pointing out the hypocrisy involved. It would only be relevant to meat eating, or driving a petrol car, if they became illegal.

None of this discussion is about politics, social power or compensation. It's about the possible hypocrisy involved in accepting the removal of some historical artefacts, but not others.

If you can't see why then you must be incapable of reason.

Retrospective pardoning is an act that undoes an ill conceived law or poor conviction. It works because the 'victim' is the
convicted individual.

That is completely different to demonising a dead person who abided by the law as it was in his day.
Slavery might be immoral by our standards but it wasn't then. It couldn't be simpler.

Do stop trying to argue idiotic ideas. You are no better than the people who dug up Oliver Cromwell and put his head on a spike or any other historical descecrstion you care to use which was based on irrational emotionalism.

Homosexuality was not illegal, homosexual sex activities were.

Why not have statutes of limitations? Anyone convicted, accused or suspected of anything gets pardoned after 100 years and replaced on the naughty step by those deemed guilty of transgressing modern standards of behaviour.
Create statues out of holograms so they can be replaced on a daily basis. Or more quickly if anyone is triggered during the day.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

But it's not, so why introduce that into the conversation?

If you wander about town being bothered by statues looking down at you, then I would suggest that it is you that have the problem

You know full well that statue bashing is just a symptom of a bigger issue. Its name is mass immigration and the erosion of British culture.

In Mauretania and Sudan chattel slavery is legal, apparently none of the owners enjoy white privilege

All I am trying to do is to get this "woke" idea put in its rightful context. It isn't quite as simple as some seem to want it to be.

Slavery wasn't just illegal, or simply immoral, by any standards. A strong argument could be made that it was even worse than paedophilia, though both are horrible. Slavers regarded their captives as less than human. Thousands died being transported, including many children. Savile was an evil man, but, so far as I know, he didn't kill anyone.

Using the passage of time to ameliorate this behaviour is not acceptable. It should be remembered, but in the right way, so that we never forget.

I came across this in an article, sums it up well I think:
"The awkwardness of history, be it colonialism or slavery, cannot be dealt with by challenging the entire basis of nationhood. Nor can the reality of a dominant culture be incessantly vilified and replaced by a contrived woke culture based on thought control, bans and, in the case of the US, an endorsement of street violence."

A spokesperson from the Glasgow City Council said that despite the council leader's apology on behalf of the local authority, that they are not proposing to remove any statues as a result of the audit yet.

I suspect the ‘yet’ was inserted by The Daily Mail

I also expect that if any statue were removed it would be someone other than livingstone.

There is no sign at all that any statue is targeted for removal. This is nonsense written by two media sources that just love to enrage people that enjoy getting enraged

So get a life, not mindlessly angry.

But it was right and good to get angry about a statue in Bristol and pull it down.

What apart from them commissioning a report to identify statues. street names, buildings etc that have some vague connection to slavery? Looks like quite a large sign to me.

We should be reaching out and re-educating slave traders in order to integrate them into today's diverse society, rather than tearing things down.

We can’t even do that with market traders.
