I will say one thing about Easter. Unlike Christmas, in my viewpoint it is less of a secular festival and more spiritual to those who believe. I appreciate the time off, but the chocolate egg thing must grate with the faithful.

As a little boy, I actually thought chocolate eggs were symbolic of the opening of Jesus's tomb!

Not any more. I am now a non-believer. Some years ago I had the opportunity to study the origins of the development of Christianity, right back to the 1st century AD and how, and by whom, the testaments were "written". I had no idea before I did this that his name wasn't Jesus at all, but Y'shua. They weren't actually penned by the Disciples, but by people who knew people who had heard stories. Introduce politics, and the game of "fairy whispers" comes to mind.

Kings quickly realised that a subservient people being promised salvation in an afterlife, provided they complied in this, gave them an easy way to rule.

That's not to say there isn't much value in the basic tenets of the Christian message. Loving one another, helping the poor and needy, and turning the other cheek when affronted is a good way for any society to operate. It's just such a pity that so many branches of Christianity don't actually practice it.

My journey but in reverse. Once I understood how 'oral history' worked and that the story of Jesus made no sense if it was just all made up, I came to believe. But each to their own. There is no compulsion in Christianity.

If people are genuinely interested in exploring it more then there is a very good book, and subsequent, film called 'The case for Christ'. Personally, I urge everybody to read 'Mere Christianity' by C.S.Lewis for a rather British perspective on it all but the first book/film I have listed might be an easier starting point although the Lewis book is not overly complex (its actually based on a series of talks/lectures that Lewis gave during WW2).

But, and I say this as somebody who genuinely struggles to even begin to live his life in line with the teachings of Christ but who has faith, nonetheless, the message of Easter about rebirth and forgiveness is one that I feel we could all do with some contemplation on.

So to all have a smashing one but perhaps, just until sunset tomorrow night, reflect a little bit on how you could perhaps try and be a little more willing to give others a bit more time and consideration.

No, I don't believe that there is a big old man with a white beard living in the clouds who is responsible for everything we see and do today.

I do believe that all organised religion is dangerous and the cause of much conflict and many wars in our known history.

Why do people like Putin exist? If there is a greater being why doesn't he stop terrorists attacking and killing innocent people. Why do different religions exist if there is only one God.

I'm inclined to agree with Wisbech that the stories and miracles that were written about and carried down through the ages were the thoughts and unusual events witnessed by people of a higher intelligence at the time and whose writings were literally considered to be gospel.

I like to think I live an honest and considerate life. I try to do the right thing and show courtesy to my fellow beings. I can do this without believing in God.

But, I do accept that some folk need to believe in something and that's fine. The Easter story is an interesting one, but difficult to believe if you consider the details.

Anyway, believe it or not, I wish all HOLers a very Happy Easter.

But Easter is about a single event. One that changed history perhaps more than any other, whatever you believe about it. A man was executed in the most brutal way possible. The people who carried that out believe he was dead. And that man then, as had been promised, came back to life.

I am also Cathoic and not a very good one. Hands up to that. I struggle in many many way. But in terms of what lays behind it all then it's not about the after-life or miracles or anything else. That all comes afterwards. Easter is about this single event

If you don't believe, on balance of probabilities, that it happened then essentially our entire cultural heritage for over 2000 years is based on a lie. I simply cannot see it in any other way.

Now you can be fine with that, believing that all humanity is effectively predicated on the basis of positive founding myths but this particular event offers no real grey areas. The Messiah or a Madman. Binary choice.

A book published multiple times, but with no attributable author and no specific dates of alleged events, with vague corroborating witness statements.
None the less, millions believe the story and millions of artefacts and buildings pay tribute to his existence, and many millions pledge their allegiance by deed and monies.

I have as much confidence in the authenticity of events of The bible as I would place on anything that comes out of BJ's mouth.

That's a NO from me

Nice to see the words ‘Comes’, ‘BJ’s’ and ‘mouth’ in same clause. Intentional or not I feel compelled to giggle like a schoolgirl.

I was raised Catholic, I am inclined to believe but equally inclined to do so in a way and to an extent I’m most comfortable with. Regarding a literal acceptance as absolute truth? My being ‘dubious’ would be a generous statement.

I tend to treat religion the same way as many things: if it works for you, I’m happy for you so long as it’s not to the detriment of anybody else’s existence.

Man created God, Not God created man, the first bible wasn't written until 120AD.

That may be true, BUT, why do we(the world) have 'AD' & more importantly, 'BC'?
