The problem Manchester United have is that AWB is nowhere near as good as Guehi and we paid £18m for him. According to Mark Goldberg he thinks United would want £25m for AWB. There is no way he's worth that and we'd be stupid to entertain paying any more than half that for him.

Put a ‘.’ in the middle of that figure and I’d say yes.

In all seriousness for £10-15million I’d have him back in a heartbeat, provided no other options are identified.

I thought clyne actually looked quite good vs Leeds. If that’s him getting back up to speed I’d be happy with him there a couple of seasons. Does seem wishful however!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Before this thread I'd thought at about £10m I'd have him back, so I'm with the flow on this one. No 25% sell on clause this time!
It probably wont happen. If the new United manager is half as good as they think he is he should be able to develop AWB. Shaw had a renaissance there for a while.
Ask the question, if the answers no,move on.

What about a swap with Wilf, as his contract is running out, Man Utd will be in some Europe competition so he can have his dream.

For the right sort of money I'd have him back. Previously he perfectly fit our system because he was a terrific defender, and as he was dependable he allowed those in front to go forward with having to worry too much.

He wasn't great going forward, but nor did he need to be, we always had, and hopefully always will have great wide men. His job was to give Wilf/Andros stability to attack from. He will be the perfect foil to Olise.

Utd buying him was always a massive mistake. They were shipping goals, so in AWB and Maguire bought 2 defenders who knew how to defend.

Fine if your team spends a lot of time defending, but when you want to be a CL team with 60% position, your defenders need to be able to do more.

Which is why overhauling Utd is such a big job. So much money spent on players that play different styles and suit different systems. ITs criminal how badly they have fudged it up.

AWB was never going to succeed there, hell PVA would have had a better chance at succeeding.

Interesting how a discussion on this site suddenly becomes a story in the press.

I wonder if they use this sites discussion points to formulate a story!

Was gutted when he went and weirdly now don't think I want him back. United clearly would want 25-30m out of principle and I genuinely don't think he suits the way we play now.

He's an outstanding defender but we play out from the back now and he can't pass. Would rather spend the money trying to land someone like Max Aarons or a lesser known alternative from Europe.

Funny your first statement as I am exactly the opposite! I was very happy with the sum and was not gutted to see him go but would happily take him back now.

Completely agree with your sentiments around the figures suggested. If they do want anything close to £20mil or higher it's a no from me and I would prefer they consider other options, MA included, who would probably be cheaper in any case.

I am very much inclined to believe if United do want to sell him, they will want to save financial face and that will inflate his worth massively (as that's what they originally did). I'm sure I am beginning to repeat myself on multiple fronts but I would like to see him on loan for a year, with a fixed sum agreed beforehand, should we decide to buy him at the end of that period.

Finally, I would just like to state that I do think he is useful, and not afraid, going forward. I just think he can only do that to an extent and that's where he needs to work well with a winger who is a bit selfish and has/wants to produce the 'final product'. Playing him as a second winger is folly IMHO and I'd argue we need more of a defensive right back still, but someone who can also support the attack to a certain extent = AWB.

Just my opinion as always not stating it as fact.

Brian Clough reputedly told his players that the only thing he could guarantee them is that if somebody came along who was better than them they would be replaced.
No doubt partly a motivational tool, but a relevant point if you want to improve a team.
Would AWB improve us ?
I think so, but it depends upon the deal.
A one year loan during which a further evaluation could be made of Ferguson could make sense.
Even better if the loan included an option to buy at Palace’s discretion and a pre-agreed price.
If however it was a straight expensive purchase which took away from our budget in more pressing areas (midfield?), then it would be a no from me as Clyne/Ward should be good enough for next season if necessary.

A lot of the talk is about him being a loan option. I can see how that works for United. Goes well, he's back in value. Doesn't go well, they're not much worse off.

From our perspective, it depends who we think the long term option is. If they're available (like Olise last year with the buyout clause), we get them now. If they aren't, or we do still think it's Ferguson, AWB on loan is a very good bet.

Another thing to think about - we DESPERATELY need to sort out the midfield this summer. If a Gallagher/RLC type signing is in the thinking (and I think we may need two in the middle as Luka, Jairo & Gallagher could all go and McArthur keeps picking up niggles) then this is a way to fix right back for a year without big upfront cost.

26th January 2010 - Enter Administration
2nd May 2010 - D-Day 1 - Survival at Hillsborough
1st June 2010 - D-Day 2 - Survival at Lloyds
7th June 2010 - CPFC2010 exchange contracts.

Tis an important point. Although it feels like we've needed a RB for yonks, Wardy and Clyne are good enough to do a job next season if needed.

I’d love to see him playing behind MO and back in a Palace shirt. My concern at the end of last year remains the holding midfield position. CG is an attacking force of nature and IMO was lost playing a deeper role in the first half against Leeds. We’ll probably lose him next year so we will be looking for someone to play similar. That still leaves someone who can sit and break down the opposition from in front of our defence. I was hoping Hughes might be that man but he gets caught out when going forward, JM is now entering the twilight of his career in the prem who like Ayew gives everything but lacks that real quality we need if we really want to progress. Funny how under Roy we bemoaned the style of play, love the way PV sets up but could end up with similar points and position to last season. Mind you under Roy I never said we should have had at least 12 more points. Well done Patrick V.
