Our set piece defending is appalling and needs work over the off season.

Some sober reflection on last night (sure I wasn't the only one unable to post comments due to server overheating?) Wow! It took some doing to lose that match. We were playing some pleasing stuff in the first half after the original blitz by them. But the second half ... we were all over the place and greatly suffered from the lack of a commanding midfield presence. If ever we needed the proverbial 'midfield general' it was last night. Luka, Hughes, Kouyate are NOT that person. This must be number one priority for next season. The manager's lack of experience was woefully exposed with his nonsensical substitutions if he did have a plan then bringing on Luka and then Benteke defied rational belief. One of the most humiliating defeats I have seen in over 70 years as a supporter.

I Know PV has a difficult enough day. But he's kidding himself, his tactical naivety lost this match. 0-2 at HT, he should have added to our physicality to cope with Everton and pressed for the third goal. He persisted with players looking tired on yellows and took off Schlupp who was quite comfortable. The subs were too late and didn't appear to fit in to any plan. No excuses for our poor sloppiness even in an intimidatory atmosphere. James McArthur badly missed.

I'd got as far down the motorway as Stafford and my head was still all over the place. It was the right move but it didn't work out. Benteke as I recall came on at 2-2 when the game was getting away from us and my thinking was that his defensive prowess (headers from set pieces) made him a more attractive option than Edouard. Agree totally. We already looked tired and leggy early in the second half before they scored their first. If not at half-time, the change should have been made very soon after it. Originally posted by steeleye20

Again, agree totally. I think the word you've left out of your post but it belong right in the middle is "panic", Our defenders panicked and lost the plot on the pitch. Vieira panicked and lost the plot off the pitch. Originally posted by steeleye20

Agree yet again, though I would say we all have the occasional bad day at the office and PV hasn't had too many of those this season. ...and that is something we need to get used to because the future is not in front of him.

He looked so out of place when he came on and that combined with hooking Schlupp when he was having a good game was midfield suicide. Was Kouyate being punished for his online indiscretion, because he would have been a better choice as would Ward who can do a job as a holding midfielder at a push.

Trying to put a defender in a forearm lock is not the correct way to tackle and yet he seems to spend an inordinate amount of time doing it.

I agree with you totally that Kouyate would have been a better choice and I wasn't being generous to Luka. He performed poorly. I was only pointing out that I understood the reasons why he was brought on. Unfortunately, he didn't deliver at all on those reasons.

There is that, and you are absolutely right. Am I allowed to say that frankly, Wilf was f***ing awful last night; as poor a game as I can remember him having in a Palace shirt? I'm not sure he really did a single useful thing all night. Strangely, though, it did underline the value of Wilf. Even when he is utter crap, defenders are absolutely terrified every time he gets the ball and he draws opposition players into his space like a magnet, thus (as often happened last night) freeing up room for Eze (who looks to be returning to form) to exploit.

Indeed, he was poor. The only thing I can say is that when he is being that closely attended to there should be more space for Schlupp and Eze to exploit and that was the case first half. It makes it all the more of a mystery why Schlupp was taken off because I thought he played really well. I don’t know the answer with Zaha, a flawed diamond is probably the best description. 3 damn lazy offsides giving away possession and 3 or 4 pretty poor fouls all added up to a fairly uninspired evening and yet we know what he can do when he is on form.
