Maybe racially, but I’m not sure they are ideologically. Ukrainians were amongst the most extreme nazis in WW2 and a large number in the east consider themselves Russians but it’s very difficult to understand the ratios involved and I would love to meet people from the region that could fill in some of the blanks. It’s a very complicated situation for sure.

We're not in WW2 and as we well know the threshold for being called a 'neo nazi' by Russian state mesia is any attempt to defend yourself against the invasion of their country.

They are the same people.

I just think the Ukrainians were more honest about it....well initially, because they have now learnt that the western media don't like it.

"Forthcoming" perhaps a better word than "honest".

Ukraine does have a trained army. But a lot of fighters are not army. They are irregular militia without the training and where the potential for atrocity and release of evidence of atrocity must be high.

The Russians are largely regulars where the control of images must be much stricter.

I have no doubt both sides are doing it whenever they get the chance. Psychos are not born and bread on only one side of the border.

I think all of those observations are probably right.

I think that's a butter way of looking at it.

I once had a flatmate who use to smear themselves all over with butter. They weren't very social but great if you had run out of Anchor.

My Grandfather was diagnosed with a terminal illness and used to get in all sorts of accidents.

Shortly before he died, my Grandmother smeared his entire back including his legs with butter! After that he went downhill pretty quickly.

'F--- the war!' Russians defiantly chant against war in St Petersburg concert

[Link]

Power in numbers. Comes after rock singer Yuri Shevchuk was charged with 'discrediting' the military for giving an anti-war speech at a gig last week.

In footage of that speech, Shevchuk can be heard telling the 8,000-strong crowd: 'The people of Ukraine are being murdered. For what?

'Our boys are dying over there. For what? What are the goals, my friends? For some Napoleonic plans of another Caesar of ours, yes?

'The motherland, my friends, is not the president’s a** that has to be slobbered and kissed all the time.'

Mikhail Khodaryonok was on Russian state TV last week offering an extrenely rare criticism to Putin's War:

"A desire to protect one's homeland, in the sense that it exists in Ukraine, it really does exist there, they intend to fight until the last man."

"Ultimately, victory on the battlefield is determined by a high level of morale among personnel, which sheds blood for the ideas which it's prepared to fight for."

On NATO, and in reference to Sweden and Finland's likely entry into the alliance, he stresses the importance of maintaining "a sense of military-political realism".

"If you go beyond it then sooner or later the reality of history will hit you so hard that you'll regret it," he says.

"Don't engage with sabre-rattling with missiles in Finland's direction. It actually looks quite amusing.

"After all, the main deficiency of our military-political position is that, in a way, we are in full geopolitical isolation and that, however much we would hate to admit this, virtually the entire world is against us."

He disputes the suggestion made by the host that it is only the West against Russia, saying the support of India and China for the country "is not so unconditional".

Predictably he has since reappeared on state TV doing a complete about turn. I expect he likes the idea of remaning alive.

He might just be partial to his digits and extremities? There's also rumours he is Gluten, Dairy, Polonium and Novichok intolerant... or allergic, can't remember which one but either way it leaves him vulnerable.

It is getting a bit ridiculous. At least there are many Russians even now in the military who are aware of the devastation this has had for them. It must surely be about saving face now as opposed to anything else for the Kremlin. I wonder if should things continue in this manner you see something akin to a mutiny amongst forces?
