Literally yesterday the government picked up Labour's windfall tax proposal and called it their own.

And people seriously question why the opposition wouldn't be more forthcoming with their own policy ideas with no GE in sight.

A windfall tax is hardly original sure Labour suggested it first but it's been around for many years and been used by both parties.

Labour can claim they said it first but they can't claim it as their own.

What, so it only counts as being decent opposition if Labour come up with entirely original proposals? Cmon...

the Tories voted against a windfall tax a week ago and have now decided it's a good idea.

I'd say that's a great example of being effective opposition.

I tend to agree with this. The purpose of an effective opposition is to argue against policies and not individuals (something all sides should concern themselves more with). By getting the conservatives to about turn on the windfall tax is effective lobbying.

However I would temper this by saying that Boris is currently getting desperate for public affection so a cynic would say he has only done this to try and win back some voters.

I feel like a victim of abuse, being chucked a few beans and told "Sorry about that, It won't happen again"
Who else gets the top jobs in Britain on a "learn as you go" basis.? Makes note,...must try not to get caught drinking in the office again.

Peter Sutcliffe hasn't murdered anyone for ages now. Why shouldn't he go free, because he seems alright to me ?

"The facts have changed", Rishi Sunak

What were the reasons against a windfall tax?
Already being muted that the very same issues on finance could be around until next year. Where does the money come from then as people will be in the same position or maybe worse. Landlords would be my guess. All them houses being rented out for a fortune. Any one who is making a very high yield and have little or no mortgage should cough up to help the needy. Exactly as the energy companies are having to do this year. Now that’s a great idea.

Why should landlords be hit for a mode of investment choice which has already received a massive hit in the last few years due to the removal of tax relief on mortgages? I for one will sell up they start attacking the rental market again and then the properties will probably be sold into the owner occupied market. Net result, hey presto, massive shortage of rental properties available and rents will continue to rocket up. Are you sure this idea has been fully thought through?

The main reasons against are that it costs money and doesn't keep your industry donors very happy.

I don't think the profit margins of Barry the landlord are comparable to BP.

Wanting to put up taxes, Labour has been singing that song for years now the so called Tories have joined them. I say so called because I don't recognise this Conservative party it's Blair's Labour Party.

And before you say it yes the bloody Tories aught to come up with some original ideas they are the government after all.

There's certainly truth in what you're saying re the parties - it's telling that the Tories windfall tax proposal was probably more generous than the Labour suggestion.

Also worrying from a Labour point of view how painfully centrist they are trying to be, despite the obvious evidence of Corbyn's legacy that there is appetite for genuine left-wing policy amongst the electorate.

I see Starmer as just Tory-lite and you see this government as similar to Blair's labour - probably says a lot as to why there are so many dissatisfied voters.
