Guehi reminds me of Southgate in that he appears to have an old head on young shoulders. If we manage to hold onto him he could end up our captain for a very long time.

Yep, tends to be the defensive players for some reason. Certainly Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Tonks, Macca, Luka and Kouyate for me - all have good leadership ability. Perhaps that's why we defend well but don't score enough goals...

Another season of steady improvement and he could well be that figure and I tend to agree, we would be foolish to turn down such money given what we could do with it.

I’ve always been biased towards CMs being captains as I think they’re best placed. Never been a fan of GKs or Forwards being captains and see that as only ceremonial.

IMHO you need to be tactically astute, lead by example, able to communicate and of course command the respect of your teammates.

I’d be strongly inclined to believe or agree MG has all of these.

I know he came from the rent boys, but he was somewhat unknown before us. I’d love to believe he sees Palace at home now and whilst he may deservedly have greater expectations I’d like to see what he can achieve here first and I think could very well do so as captain.

I think there is a wider variety of `styles` of captains than there used to be.

The likes of Keane and Pearce were fearsome in your face captains. I wouldn't have argued with them. However I think the game and attitudes have matured a bit and there is a generation of more `molly cuddling` captains. It's the same for managers now too. I think the likes of MG fit into this more modern iteration of a captain.

I like the observation by doi209 about been able to "see the whole game". People like McCarthur in my opinion have this vision and so when they see say Zaha or Eze are not tracking back to cover the full backs they can have a word while still been able to concentrate on their own job. Similarly when defending set pieces there is someone who notices there is an unmarked player in the box that needs picking up. You need these type of players and i think Palace need to take this into account when recruiting. You look at teams like Watford who despite Roy's organisation skills were still leaking goals.
