Has crossed the Finish Line.

Presumably now resting in the winners-Enclosure. There are no tax-men in heaven.

Nine Derby winners is unlikely to be bettered.
Always felt a bit sorry for him being thought of as a misery when in addition to his deafness being 6 inches taller than most jockeys he couldn't eat anything for about 40 years.

He was fast for such a small bloke. It took HMRC years to catch the little man.

One of my favourite ever quiz questions:

Who is the only 15 stone person to have ridden a Derby winner?

Lester Piggott's cell mate.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Had his Knighthood removed for dodging tax when many of today's decorated w***ers have done far worse.
Also read today that at one meeting he had his ear almost ripped off early in the day. Had it sewn back on and rode a winner in a classic race later in the same meeting!
Oh - He also broke fine at the same time.
A hard b****** and the best jockey in living memory!

A great jockey but never quite embraced by the British public in the way some other sports people have been.

It could be argued that he didn't embrace the public that much either. That was part of his uniqueness though I feel.

a very severe speech impediment must surely have diminished his Media Marketability.

All the darlings of the Sports media did a good telly slot on Wogan or BBC or whatever. Lester was a fairly quiet man and almost introverted. But for the cognoccenti , Lester was to horse-racing akin to Tiger Woods to Golf.....totally out there in a class of his own.

Hard to disagree with any of that. It's nice sometimes when peoeple have a bit of character and individuality rather than becoming the latest media darling or personality. That's not some peoples bag and he instead let his ability do the talking. A legend of the sport.

There was a story about a bloke who bought a horse and hired Piggott to ride it. After a very short time he knew the horse had no chance of winning so just cantered round. At the finish this bloke stormed up to him demanding to know why he hadn't whipped the horse into trying harder.
"Because your horse is no good"
"You're a disgrace Piggott. You'll never ride for me again"
"Oh, well. I guess it's all over for me then".
