THE Appleby horse fair will kick off next week as travellers are already descending on Cumbria for the week-long festivities.

Families and their horses are set to arrive in their hundreds for the historical celebration on the streets of Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria.
Visitors from the Gyspy, Roma and Travelling community normally descend from miles away to attend the week-long jaunt.

Today, horsemen and women were seen heading along the A65 near Hellifield, North Yorkshire, as they made their way to the traveller meet-up.

The fair was meant to be on the first weekend of June - but the date was pushed back a week to ensure it doesn't fall on the same weekend as the Queen's Jubilee.

Travellers ride traditional horse and bow top carts along country roads towards the site.
And some owners are expected to ride their horses into the River Eden as part of an Appleby tradition.

The washing of horses dates back hundreds of years when animals were cleaned and ready for selling.

In 2020, the fair was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, but huge crowds descended on the area last year.

Glammed-up women were seen strutting down the streets of Appleby-in-Westmorland, in their finest clobber last August.

A good opportunity for the police and benefit fraud squad to catch up with some old friends. They wont have to look too far.

That doesnt happen hardly ever, its the RSPCA & Vets who are the busiest due to the fact most of the younger element drive their pony's to excess during the festival.

I lived in Tebay(junct 38 on M6) for awhile before moving down to Kendal, the days leading up to the festival, timed to coincide with the Derby @ Epsom(not this year tho) was a nightmare for all the surrounding villages & towns, with hoard's of them everywhere, wanting to buy this, sell you that, do your garden, take pets out, tarmac your drive(even if you didn't have one). Sometimes you had to stay awake all night to make sure they didn't creep up & either force entry to your property or nick summat that weren't nailed down.

Great spectacle for the tourists(before they are scammed/mugged) but for the locals, a nightmare.

I feel sorry for the ratepayers who have to pay for the clearing up afterwards.....

Lets talk about a group of people who ...

- travel around a lot
- are often controversial

- are horse-obsessed , racing, hunting with dogs etc
- scrounge off the State

- are often inbred
- have families with a major history of violence

- speak in a lexicon often aloof and separate from normal speech.

- have arranged-marriages
- their arrival into Town is often an expensive security nightmare

Of course, we are talking about Royal Families.

Not sure this is a discussion.

Probably no worse than if you live in a city centre and have a huge influx of people on a weekend or if you live near a stadium hosting major events.

Probably better than England/English football fans descending en masse to a city.

One of my oldest friends was a copper who used to police this and said that as a group the travellers used to sort out issues themselves.

Any event like this is also probably a blessing and a curse for local businesses as they can make a big wedge of cash but it comes at a cost.

I can't see it going away.

Do they still commute between Ireland and Wales so they can collect benefits in both countries?
