Only caught the tail end of it on the radio yesterday however the outcome was that a mainstream airline had offered staff their jobs back but if they took the job then they had to pay back their redundancy money. I’m pretty sure it was BA they were talking about. Disgraceful behaviour if true.

The travel industry & particularly airlines plead poverty & pending collapse of their companies & the industry as a whole at the best of times - so if you add in what everyone has been through over the last couple of years & the way that it was managed its hardly suspiring its emerging in a shambolic way.

Brexit had nothing to do with the laying off of staff rather than taking up the furlough offer, it’s just another pathetic excuse by O’Leary. Don’t forget he was one of the major driving forces in getting planes up and running after the pandemic, even though they did not have the staff.
These people were so arrogant they presumed people would be queueing up to take the jobs. Perhaps if they started paying a decent wage and giving decent t&cs it might be different.
Please explain how Brexit is to b,and for them overbooking flights? Blame Brexit for a lot of things, if you must but not this. They are just attempting to hide their incompetence and unfortunately some are taken in by it.

He said it was they can"t rehire EU staff and have to use little britains Spider-seems fair excuse to me, less people to choose from = longer waits to hire, but what do these chairmen know heh?

If the EU staff had registered to stay in the UK they could have been re employed, the option was there. It was an easy process and they had ample warning to do it. Absolute nonsense that they could not rehire them and an out and out lie . No excuse at all, doing everything on the cheap, O’Leary is one of the most obnoxious people I have met.
As I previously said, they were offering jobs back on worse pay and conditions, you even mentioned that in one of your previous posts (14k pa). Also working at the airport not only entails ridiculous shift patterns but constant abuse from many travellers

The real irony is if these travel companies had paid the furlough, took the hit and rode it out they would be quids in now. Imagine an airline that could guarantee your flight and holiday. People would pay a top price atm. Short sighted money grabbing t***s

Well he would wouldn’t he. To coin a phrase. Brexit appears to be a get out for many f***ed businesses atm. Nothing to do with the fact they were f***ed before brexit but hey let’s load up the problem to hmg as it’s very convenient!

Having just been to Switzerland and Italy I can vouch that staff shortages are not limited to the Uk.
Every restaurant we went to was operating on shoe string staff numbers even in the best hotel that we stayed in.
I asked about it and was told that the pandemic had decimated staff levels and they weren't coming back.
So given the EU countries are suffering a similar fate and our bosses are still blaming Brexit it seems an easy excuse to make while not taking responsibility for screwing things up yourself!

Jet2 boss is having his Gerald Ratner moment

[Link]

He and the others should stop complaining about lazy workers and not being able to import cheap labour from the EU.

I think we are at a tipping point I predicted this prior to the referendum. Bosses in this country got fat and lazy (see what I did there Jet2) on cheap unskilled labour.

They have had decades of importing cheap labour as the answer to their business problems. Perhaps now they will start to invest in technology and training.

Boris needs to stand firm although we have low unemployment there are still many many people without jobs and this needs to be addressed before we start the shell game of cheap foreign labour again.

Pubs, restaurants, hotels cannot get staff in Ireland. They are operating shorter hours, shutting down and charging sky high prices. Probably every business needs staff here.
Conversely, there has been no effort to make the unemployed work.
