Kouyate is a terrible passer of the ball and is awful under pressure, but against better teams he adds defensive steel and can slip seamlessly into the backline. A good squad player, but no longer a starter for me except in games where we won't have much of the ball. The question is can a club our size afford to pay high wages to an ageing squad player? Also, I read we are only offering short-term deals to players over 30. I have a feeling Kouyate might head off to Turkey, which was rumoured last summer.

I'm presuming the Turkish press don't get their stories from here, but I suppose you never know...

i feel like it's almost pointless speculating about our midfield next season. It's blindingly obvious that there are going to be major changes, and we'll have targets in mind. Once those are in place we'll have a better idea of how it will be blended with what's left of the squad. With a full pre-season you'd have to think that the likes of Hughes, Olise, Eze will be starters from the beginning of the season.

Is that not exactly what Hughes, Kouyate and a 34 year old McArthur are? Usually play but rarely outstanding (for McArthur, usually good but rarely fit) in a side that finished 12th?

It's the level of Guimaraes, Moutinho, Neves, Ward-Prowse, Phillips, Eriksen, McGinn, Ndidi that give you a chance of breaking the top 10 - good Premier League players. Eze is the only central midfielder (loose definition) we currently own that would get any game time in the top 8 sides.

Then you have the outstanding level (De Bruyne, Gundogan, Fabinho, Thiago, Jorginho) that manage to make the good ones look comparatively poor.

'Bang average' more commonly is defined as bad. Even when people say, average...what they mean isn't actually average...it's bad.

PS. I'd have McArthur in my team over Ward-Prowse any day.

I'd look At Sande Berge at Sheffield United, a real work horse

Really...doesn't he play in the same position as Eze?

Thanks, you round up my original thoughts posted above where I suggest that our midfield is bang average. And just to add, I'm talking about the here and now, that is, in McArthur's case in particular, a player who for the past two seasons has spent as much time on the treatment table as on the pitch. Of course I recognise his role as an excellent servant for the club, but depending upon whether Vieira has a plan for McArthur for certain games, or wants to rotate the squad, then it's time to accept that McArthur won't be featuring prominently.
The one thing that brought the average ability of our midfield into acute focus was the arrival of loanee Conor Gallagher - so much better than what we already had (bar an in form Eze). Box to box stamina, all round enthusiam and positivity, and crucially, getting forward to score 8 priceless goals. Without Gallagher's contribution and ablity to tie the midfield together I suspect we would have finished far lower than 12th place.
Herein lies the challenge for the DOF and manager to appraise.

I like Luka, but he needs to go. Same for Jairo.

Schlupp is a great impact player, but I still don't see him as a starter. I'd be happy to see him get another deal though.

McArthur needs to stay because he is a real leader and still offers a lot on the pitch when fit.

I'd say we're crying out for a box to box midfielder, which it sounds like Doucoure fills this criteria. We also need at least one more experienced midfielder or a top up-and-coming player. The question then is how good are the U23s? Are Boateng, Banks or Wells-Morrison ready to step up and push the seniors?

Personally I think Vieira will want two quality holding midfielders to allow Eze to have more of a free role in front of them.

Decent summary, although not sure any of the U23s are ready. Maybe a loan for them next season and see how they get on.

Luka and Jairo barely play and clearly aren't in PVs plan - however, both top payers and under contract so can't see anything happening there.

Kouyate is better against the top 6, especially away games, as his work rate is fantastic. When we have more possession his passing is average. However, i suspect his head may be turned by Champions League football, unless Palace offer him a lucrative 2 year contract. Maybe a 1 year with an option of a 2nd is the way to go.

We are like Macca but at 34 his powers are waning and he is definitely more injury prone these days - he retired from international footie due to a longstanding back injury.
Would be happy for him to sign for 1 more year though.

Hughes is ok, but not much different from what we already had in the middle so i was a little surprised we were so keen to get him.

I'm hoping for big things from Eze next season, although he needs to become more involved in games, he flitters in and out too much for my liking.

Schlupp has 1 year left so he is not going anywhere.

If one of Kouyate and Macca re-sign we could get away with 1 extra defensive centre mid, if both leave and with Gallagher's loan ending we need a major re-jig.

The club had a clear strategy last year, spend the majority of the budget on two CB's and then use the loan spot for the midfield with a view to addressing it later.

I think we will adopt this same strategy again this summer but with the focus being on 2 CM's and utilising the loan spaces for other areas like RB, CB cover or up top.

I think on that basis, you can rule Gallagher out of any return and if he does it will likely be right at the end of the window and only done if we are willing to completely break the original budget.

I'd love to see us get Berge and Doucoure. Berge is of a similar ilk to Cabaye, deep lying centre mid, can break up play but more importantly is composed on the ball and can dictate the play. Doucoure would sit alongside him but is more high energy and can break forward to join the attack. he's less advanced than Gallagher was but that will suit our style for next season.

These two will offer protection to the back four, whilst also providing more composure, creativity and balance to the team. This then free's up the team to have Eze or Olise in the hole with less defensive responsibility and much more service.

If we can get a more complete RB that can overlap and contribute going forward as well as a striker, I think we'll be a real force next year.

I would love to see us use our loan spots for the likes of Liam Delap, Carlton Palmer, Colwill, Kaide Gordon, Harvey Elliot, Neco Williams.

I think if we can bring in two CM's this season, the following season will follow the same pattern and address further up the pitch with loans to cover off other areas and that being an ongoing pattern.

If we can replicate the success of Anderson and Guehi in central midfield, we then have an incredible spine to continue to build on.

I’ve read an interview with Hughes on the Palace website where he suggests that he lost the ability to get away from players owing to a knee injury.
This meant he has had to adapt his game.
I recall when he started his career that he played in a more advanced role and was seen as having a very bright future with many top clubs looking at him.
Watching him at Palace now it’s evident that he has a good skill set being tidy on the ball and able to work the ball under pressure.
The fact that he seems to play within himself may reflect how he has had to adapt his game because of his injury.
Next season I don’t see him as a first name on the team sheet in midfield but see him making a similar limited contribution to that he hade this past season.
This is fine and highlights the importance of having a decent squad.

No idea who Sambia is lol but I think this could be very close to the reality.

I have a sneaky suspicion we may procure the WBA GK in which case Butland may leave. I have an equally sneaky suspicion AWB may make a return regardless of mine or anyone else’s opinion on him.

I can’t see O’Brien but if we do I don’t imagine he’d be a nailed on starter.

My guess, which can only be a wild one at this stage is that we will see Johnstone, AWB & Doucoure come in but on top of this I’d personally like another midfielder and a young ‘out and out’ winger coming in to back up Mickey and Wilf. A striker may well be under consideration however unless they have a ‘sure thing’ or spend big I’d stick with JPM and Edouard next season.

Hope to see a few outgoings too!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
