You can't help but see that the affect of priorising the short game has had a shocking affect on batting for any real time periods.

I hear what you say and partly agree but with the exception of Bairstow the rest of our batters have been playing county cricket earlier in the season and I think that they have all scored at least one century.

Perhaps they are just not up to it against international bowlers

EDIT - except Rooty

Seems to be the case.

I thought Pope was the new Thorpe but it appears not to be.

Maybe this Brook fellow they are talking about has the ability.

Root calm at one end on 23 but what must he think of nutter Stokes?

Rushing the bowler with 4 wickets down then bowled and reprieved by a no-ball.

Somehow he has scraped to 14 and there is no batting to come.

The ball will get softer and the NZ have shown you can prosper, but try telling Captain Stokes and Bairstow that.

They don't need coaching, they need psychiatry.

Can Root squeeze us over the line this morning?

Will one or two of the others step up?

NZ attack can make short work of our lengthy tail.

Test cricket at it's best.

Root and Stokes seem to be the only reasonably reliable batsman in the line up.

Fingers crossed that Root can bring off what looked like a highly unlikely victory.

Well played by Root. Hopefully Potts can maintain this too.

What an innings that was by Joe Root, in control from the first ball.

The wagon wheel of shots all around the ground with minimum risk.

'England's best ever batsman' - Sir Alastair Cooke.

And he needs to be, the future does not look good with Stokes he was reckless and with Bairstow nearly lost us the match, a test match is not the village green.

When erratic Stokes departed Root took control and accelerated it was pure class, it was chanceless and he managed the run rate and emotions of the occasion and pressed home the victory.

I think his innings will live on in the memory.

It was his first 4th innings Century and it made Root pass 10,000 runs, so it will be memorable.

Problems throughout the side laid bare again, however.

Broad wasn't great. Anderson was good with the new ball swinging but then very quiet. Potts was the pick of the bowlers on debut. Parkinson not good enough.
Openers, again, not good enough. Both look dodgy. Middle order - went missing as usual, all look like one day players - except for Root. Stokes wouldn't bowl himself much - he's been injured, fair enough.
Too long a tail when you take into account the bowlers not really being great. Right keeper? Not sure either.

Fair play to Potts for taking his opportunity but he wouldn't have been there without injuries to Jofra Archer, Matthew Fisher, Saqib Mahmood, Mark Wood, Sam Curran, Ollie Robinson, Chris Woakes, Olly Stone or Tom Curran.
Another who's not fully fit is George Garton who looked promising before a series of side injuries.

Pope, Butler, Bairstow? Wonder if Stewart will come out of retirement and show them how to bat and keep wicket.

An issue with Potts is that he is a low eighties bowler and you wonder what he offers on flat tracks aboard. Obviously we all hope that doesn't turn out to be the case.

That injury list is nuts.
