He then made a pro team of the best players from the groundsman and CHARGED local well to do to play!!!! Far cry from today! We seemed to be top dog of the London league. There were two sets of rules around then. Sheffield and London. We had the casting vote as to which would be adopted. Sheffield had similar goals to aussie rules, and points. They continued that league until 1875 when they switch to London rules. The FA cup which we suggested was also played under London rules, and the finals were played at the Palace as well. An amazing history and fascinating read.

Obviously it's from the perspective of a Fulham fan (our apparent rival for the title of oldest professional London club) but it contains a good summary of the case against the cpfc claim, as put forward by historians Mark Metcalf and Clive Nicholson. I've no idea how eminent (or objective) Messrs Metcalf and Nicholson are, but they have certainly done a more thorough job looking into the age of the club than I expect our marketing team to have done: Personally, I couldn't give a s*** either way about the clubs true age, but I don't like the arbitrary nature of the clubs pronouncement. We reckon we're the oldest club, Fulham reckon (London-wise at least) it's them, Notts County have thier own ideas.. . It'll end up like boxing, with three or four blokes simultaneously claiming to be world champion. Self publicity over objective truth.

The club we are was established in 1905 and that's the long and short of it. Yes, you can go further back through history (on any number of subjects) and find somewhat tenuous links to a back story but, (as is the case with 1861) it becomes a matter of how you want to interpret the tenuous links because they're not clear-cut, indisputable facts. The best you can say is that "on the balance of the evidence, we can make a reasonable claim to 1861" but for me, that's not enough to change to an accepted fact. It's more a case of reasonably well-justified revisionist history and to be honest, I don't really see why we need to change the accepted facts of the matter. 1861 or 1905? Who gives a toss, other than a random historian who wants to establish the credibility of his research and a company that sees a marketing opportunity. We were founded in 1905 and have links to an earlier organisation that dates back to 1861 is probably the most accurate summation.
