Malcolm Ebiowei ignored Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag and Steve McClaren to join Crystal Palace – with Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman DRIVING him to his signing.

Highly-rated Ebiowei, 18, has moved to Selhurst Park from Derby on a free — a deal we first revealed in April.

McClaren was a technical director at the Rams and tried to get the winger to follow him in a series of phone calls. Ebiowei even snubbed a text from new boss Ten Hag.

But London teen Ebiowei was swayed to join the Eagles after transfer-guru Freedman made it his personal crusade.

The club’s sporting director met him twice, then went back to see him in a South London gym last week before showing him around Palace’s facilities.

Then the canny Scot turned up at the player’s door to take him for his medical and signing.

The article makes Dougie sound like a stalker

I would imagine in earlier years if Man Utd were interested in a player just the fact they were interested would be enough to turn a players head & have him keen to join, times have changed, Man Utd of the present day don't have that allure, even to the point that the recent set up has been seemingly almost like an anti transfer advert.

None of us know what has been Ebiowei,s reasoning for choosing Palace. But to beat United to him has to be considered a major step forward in Palaces recruiting abilities.
United have everything and more than Palace. His manager Rooney, is a United Icon, and would almost certainly have pushed him their way , Steve McLaren, was his coach for a while..
Yet it looks like he is Palace. Maybe he thinks a break through here is more likely. All he has to do is live up to the hype and that might come true.

Didn't Dougie also choose us over Man Utd when signing from Barnet ?

It could be true to a degree. But it’s fairly common, and it will go to a tribunal .
The boy is out of contract, other than a compensation fee Derbys claims go no further, and that is often best decided by tribunal.

Agreed . A tribunal should reflect that in any decision.. Can’t blame Derby for hoping or trying for as much as they can get, considering their financial situation.

Remember we signed Ferguson and didn't have a fee set until over a year later and even then it was pretty low, especially given we'd supposedly been willing to pay about 9 or 10 million for him before he got injured. Given the circumstances and his relatively limited experience I wouldn't imagine the fee would be more than a million. If Ebiowei and Plange were both to turn out to be stars then I don't we'll get invited to any birthday parties at Derby for a while!
