The lad is a Hammers fan (as is his family) so I think it’s fair enough that he chooses them on this occasion - think most of us would do the same if we were joining another club and Palace came in at the 11th hour.

West Ham obviously don’t bother with scouts, as usual they just wait to see who we’re interested in and then gazump us. I won’t stress over it too much, I’d never heard of him before our interest and you never know, we might just have dodged another expensive championship bullet

Very strange one this as we seemed to be in for him last year but reports say we wouldn’t pay the asking price and he went for £1.5 million to Swansea.

Its another example of other clubs being able to conclude business quickly and efficiently. Palace seem to procrastinate, bargain and "sleep on it", in the mean time another club come and wrap up the business in 24 hours. No doubt it will happen again before the end of the window. Dougie can spot a player, no doubt about that, but the business end of the deals needs streamlining.

The club continue to be "prudent" with its money, I guess best possible scenario is to get in, do the deal & then announce it, but whichever way you look at it getting into a bidding war with Wet Spam (who generally have looser purse strings than us) cant really be considered as part of the game plan - If we offered 8 million, WH offered 12 million what would our next offer have to be ? (close on double our original offer) For sure it sucks, but you just have to suck it up & move on. Originally posted by the eagle villain2

I'm not convinced he was a top target for us. Where would he have played, was he first choice? Is he not a similar player to Doucoure? My guess is he was seen as a backup player at a decent price but we were not prepared to battle it out with West Ham once they gazumped us. A nice to have that didn't work out.

Rather like the Bowen, situation, it would be no surprise if Downes ,was a WH long term interest that was concluded because of Palace interest. Swansea wanted £12million from the start, WH just needed a prompt to pay it.
