I also found out when I retired that CS had opted me out of some NI Contributions, still not sure I understand this but I have been paying lump sums every year since I retired to ensure I got full state pension. Also, I do worry that you may have been wrongly-advised about needing to pay those "catch-up" NI contributions. Whereas you may well have been opted-out of the State Earnings Related Pension, and therefore you paid NI at less than the full rate, it's impossible to be opted out of basic state pension accrual. I think you've forgotten the 3/80ths tax-free lump sum for every year of service on top of the pension ie 150% of salary after 40 years.
