Definitely, but let's put ourselves in the Arse's shoes shall we? A great pre-season, looking odds-on against Palace, but if you were an 'Arse' player or fan would you feel 100% certainty coming to Selhurst and taking an "easy" 3 points? I wouldn't. And history wouldn't. My concern is PV's tactics. If he stuffs up again like he did against Chelsea in the FA cup semi and tries to defend and soak pressure, giving them too much respect, then we are doomed IMHO, because our defence is an achilles heel and exposing it would be foolhardy. But, if he is brave, and orders the troops onto the front foot to harrass and spoil Arse's shape, drawing less play away from our defenders and more play minutes among our mids and strikers, then I will be feeling a lot less butterflies than otherwise. Your post inadvertently I feel highlights an important issue with this match. 'Butterflies' (nerves, pressure) will have a lot to do with it.
The pressure is on THEM to perform - not us - we are expected to lose. So attack, attack, attack = less nerves for me, but defend, defend, defend = more. I am keen with butterflies to see PV's tactics.

I think that Vieira's more attack minded than, for instance, certain previous managers - don't you? I think we try to build up by passing in general but noticed more pressing and more direct passing in pre-season
I'm not expecting us to deviate from playing out from the back though. It can be a bit hairy sometimes but, fair play to Vieira, we've proved we can do it.
Ward's never looked better - which I find a bit confounding. He was our weak link for a while but really came back at the end of the season, playing left back too. Some player for us over the years. I reckon a legend in a few years.
We're not going to lose without a fight to anyone. What more can we ask?

Can't argue with your comments. But I wonder if PV can sometimes get a bit negative in emotionally important games? I thought he caved in to fear against Chelsea in the FA Cup - but I'm no expert. Maybe he did the right thing and we just lost? Yes, playing out from the back looks scary but good on him - we want to see football, and supporters really enjoyed watching Palce play under PV despite some losses. Joel Ward! What a legend! He joined us at the start of our recent PL campaign and looks awesome, looks aweful, improves himself and looks awesome again! How does he do it? Yes, seeing Palace go out there and giving it their best - what more can we ask? Nothing.

Watching the Montpelier game on Saturday nobody should have any illusions about our progress.

The opposition was moderate, we should have scored more and the mass of substitutions didn't improve things.

I can see Arsenal exploiting some of our more obvious defensive lapses.

Doucoure settled in well but it is still blatantly obvious we still don't have a midfield general capable of bringing the ball forward,
instead of one touch passing frequently to a marked player and very reminiscent of how the lionesses struggled against a hard pressing, physical Germany.

I haven't got butterflies, just a foreboding we will lose 3-1.

Hope I am proved hopelessly wrong ...

I wouldn't say our defence is our achilles heel. But I agree with your macro point. We are building a team to keep the ball, and if you have the ball your oppo cant score. We are now not build to sit back and soak up pressure.

Granted Olise isn't fit yet, but our front 4 has the ability to cause anyone problems this year. We need to be brave and the results will come.

Only real negative for me is we've had a bit of a disjointed pre-season and then by all accounts have had a very good one. But its a tricky start so we need to be bang up for this one

Good points ty. I would differ slightly by saying that I think we had a very good preseason, and that the splitting of squads actually benefitted us. Enormous experience was had traveling, bonding, playing very good opposition in front of big crowds, equalling lots (double?) the minutes of playing time for a lot of squad players. Then the Montpelier match was just perfect to "tie the whole room together" as the Dude in The Big Lebowski might say. I will stubbornly maintain that defence is a PV weakness, based upon history and what we have seen, even with Montpelier's 2 late goals, against a side that was dominating them. But yes, keeping and playing with the ball is great to watch after the RH years - regardless of winning or losing.

An abundance of Cabbage Whites round here.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
