A 2 year contract means Kouyate is another player at AFCON 2023 (in January 2024).

We are at risk of Doucoure, Kouyate, Olise, Eze, Zaha, Schlupp and Ayew all being at that tournament.

That is a huge reason not to give him a 2 year contract.

Zaha, Schlupp, Ayew, contracts end before Jan 24 Eze Olise, as of yet do not play for African nations. So any decisions at that time go well beyond keeping Kouyate or not.

Why would Eze be at the Afcon? He will be in the England setup by then

Why a smart move ? He has left he has no contract that’s it. If he comes back then he’s a new signing.

Because they left the door open for him to change his mind. He's not going to get a 2 year deal so that's why he ran his contract down however he may decide that better the devil... in which case we can re-sign him with minimum fuss on the deal he originally rejected.

It may not happen but who knows.

Interesting Chelsea have agreed a deal with Villa to sign their midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka for 20m he played 12 Prem games last season, so what does that mean for Gallagher & RLC, could one be on the way or will they stick the new signing out on loan?

Has dazza slipped down the back of a couch or something? ,although the links/rumours have been sparse on Twitter lately hence why Reliable D hasn’t been around as much…….

The trouble with making exceptions is that from then on every case wants to be viewed as an exception -

With regards to Kouyate I am surprised he hasn't found somewhere in the time that this stalemate has been going on as you would think with his attributes (as you have pointed out below) someone else out there would be only too keen to offer him 2 years.

Kouyate is rarely injured, doesn't carry excess weight and shows no sign of slowing down or lacking fitness.
He knows the club, appears to be well liked by the manager and his team mates and his versatility is a bonus.
I understand having a general policy for players over thirty but I'm sure exceptions could be made.
If we have a younger equivalent replacement lined up then fair enough, but there appears to be no sign of this at present.

Hmm, I see no floodgate issue here. 2/3 players a season will be able to make that case; only if they want to; and the club will consider it on its merits.

2 years works well with me for Kouyate. Does not take him past Jimmy Mac's age (or does it?).

And Kouyate would be an important but fringe player by then.

I think it depends upon how its been integrated - if its a cast iron rule or if its a guideline consideration where there is the possibility where every case is decided upon its merits - in which case who decided which merits are more relevant ?

As others have said how will they handle the Zaha situation, perhaps offer him a new deal whilst still 29 ?

Additionally how many other guideline rulings are there (that we haven't heard about within the club) which could be effected by either upholding or an eroding of this one ?

Difficult to say -

But at the moment it seems as though the club is insisting on it being a one year deal & presumably the player is insisting that he wants more security than that - bit of a stalemate but the clock is ticking / the season is starting & presumably the club have a plan to go forward without him if necessary.
