Unhappy about the loss but happy about our efforts. We played well when we finally got going after a disjointed preseason and against a $1/4 billion side with genuine hopes of a top 4 finish. We were unlucky not to have scored twice but credit to Ramsdale who was in my view the difference between the two teams. It’s a good thing to get a tough opponent early in the competition as it has forced us to get into top gear nice and early and expose weaknesses such as defending set pieces (again). Some nice play especially Zaha’s throughball to Eze. I wouldn’t be too harsh on some misses and errors. For much of the latter minutes we were outplaying them which is AWESOME when you consider their resources. No, a good outing, very positive, looking forward to seeing more improvements.

The midfield balance didn’t look right, but in fairness it’s unlikely to be the lineup when players return and after the transfer window.
Schlupp does a job, but is not a central midfield player.
It was Doucoure’s first game and he will need time to settle.
Eze looked lost in the first 30 minutes and seemed to chase around with little purpose or effect on the game.
As the game progressed he improved and had more influence on the game.
He’s clearly talented, but it may take a while to resolve the best role for him as you can’t have midfield players anonymous for long periods of games.

Unless and until we buy a striker, Mateta seems to be the better option than Edouard.
Edouard contributes little outside the penalty area despite putting in plenty of running.
Centre halves seem quite comfortable dominating him and we can’t build moves around him.
Mateta is at least awkward to play against and is involved more in build up play.

I’m hopeful that we’ll add a quality midfield player and forward to replace Benteke in this window and this will allow the team to progress as we clearly have enough quality in most areas

I mentioned on another thread my concern regarding the midfield. A loanee came in last season and totally outshone the players already at the club, fortunate for us, as without Gallagher I suspect we would have been fighting relegation. Now we are the same starting point, hoping Doucoure can quickly get up to speed. The midfield as it stands in non-existent, hence the long balls from Andersen.
Vieira still imagines Schlupp to be a central midfielder, bizarre.
Eze, a luxury player with obvious ability, but one who doesn't tackle (a pre-requisite for a midfielder imo) and who needs the ball at his feet to do anything, i.e. a supply from the likes of Doucoure and Schlupp.
We will do well to avoid a battering by Liverpool.

You are echoing my thoughts. The 'manager reaction' comments from PV on the Palace website mention "failure to take chances" a fair few times, but little else. I fear it could be a long, hard season.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

Realistically, we can expect a similar result against Liverpool. But with that experience under our belts with this one, we can also expect to do well throughout the season. It's always appeared to me that it takes up to 0-12 opening games for various teams to get to their best. Some start straight away others not. For Palace to get these two up nice and early means we get into top gear nice and early, and sometimes you can steal a win because they are often not quite performing smoothly. I'm positive that these difficult fixtures will mean a baptism of fire for our new players to get them performing at the level we need them to. We were very disjointed too, with Eze and others not EXACTLY sure of their best connections teamwise - if you know what I mean. By the second half they were much more sure, and by next week more so, and by week 3 and 4 very more so. We won't be getting relegated! I can remember a time when that was our concern from match one - not feeling disappointed because we didn't hand Arsenal a hiding!

Its the way we play that is the issue and players like Wilf who have no football intelligence.

Hes loses the ball over 90% of the time this is unacceptable.

We have players that should be counter attacking quickly but we don't they dwindle on the ball so the opposition gets all players back then its wasted.

This is why strikers look useless you need service.

We need balls going intot he ball quickly and also need players that can put them in Wilf and Ayew wont do that.

This line up was strange to begin with Schlupp is useless in this role why is PV not learning I find he is a good player coming on later in game.

Hughes should be playing and it was the wrong game to start the new guy.

Palace had an awful preseason which didn't help manager needs to put his foot down stop SP doing these pre seasons for $.

Wrong game to start Dacoure? Ffs he was our best player

A woeful first half hour but we eventually got into the game. Andersen was our best player by a country mile. I'd like to see Will Hughes start our next game to give the midfield the bite it lacks.

We didn’t take our chance and they did, wasn’t a lot between the sides and I thought we did well considering lack of preparation. Andersen does fizz that cross field ball beautifully, they land on a sixpence every time.

My observations from the Lower Holmesdale:
Very slow start and we’re hassled off the ball too easily.
Defending fir first goal, atrocious
Played our way back into it but really need to take our chances.
Guiata looks uncomfortable with ball at his feet.
Dacoure is going to be a class player.

Now the referee. The inconsistency beggars belief, how many times did White haul down Zaha?
Why no VAR checks on handballs?
Can someone explain why a free kick was given to Arsenal when Gabriel nearly sliced into his own net? No one near me could.

Finally did Xhaka have a bet on getting booked in the first half. The only explanation for one of the most outrageous dives you will see all season

After the first 20 minutes I was fearing a stuffing but ended up disappointed not to get a point - their second goal was a bit of a sucker punch.
Hughes will be helped by the new leniency from referees, unless last night was an exception, conversely Ayew's contribution will drop if he's not winning fouls but presumably his place will go to Olise with Ebiowei as back up.

Agree with all of this, and Dacoure does look like an excellent signing.

A very good summing up of the current palace situation, i think by 7/8 matches in a better assessment can be made, i think it is only the top six we cany finish above, and position 7/8 and 9 are perfectly possible.
