Can You Still Afford to Go To The Pub?

In 1967 my folk moved from Wallington to a small village in Sussex. I was 18 at the time and went with them. Working in Croydon the drive home was a delight and I regularly stopped in the local for a pint before going home. I had a pewter tankard which hung in the bar and it was usually full by the time I'd walked through the door of the pub and was standing at the bar. I thought I'd made it and the cost of a pint then was around 2/6d (13p) or about £1.50 in today's prices. Going to the pub today the average cost of a pint is just short of £4, more in London of course. West Ham have sparked outrage by charging £7.60 for a pint. It's now an expensive business especially if you're buying a round for a few mates. However Fullers London Pride in Sainsbury's works out at about £1.42 a pint. No wonder more folk are drinking at home rather than go to the pub and that pubs are closing at a rapid rate. So, do you still go to the pub for a pint or only if you have something to eat as well?
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

I haven't been to a pub for years. I prefer to enjoy a bottle of ale or craft beer at home. And if I want to sit in a room full of people staring at their phones or acting like knob heads, I can get that at home too!

In bygone days I heard someone comment that he never imbibes alcohol at home adding "Drinking at home is like drinking in cold blood". I am a gentleman whose alcoholic consumption is generally in social settings, on exceedingly rare occasions I will accompany family in having the odd drink in my or their abode.Never consumed a drop during 'Lockdown'. Tend to drink in CIU/British legion clubs which are cheaper. Only tend to go in a pub if eating as well or at an away game. I paid £7 at pub in Fulham 4/5 years ago!!!! God knows what it is now.

Thankfully where i am, its bars, with the beach a few metres away, table service, food available(if required), between 1 & 3 euros a large beer(depending on what day & what time). I hate this!

London prices - cheaper on the south coast ! Your mention of £7 reminded me about a visit to Singapore back in the late 90s.In a swish restaurant I ordered what was described as a "Jug of ale" priced at the equivalent of £7, only to discover that the "Jug of ale" was really a pint of ale.

One morning an elderly gent came in and asked for a mixed half pint of mild and bitter (Wikipedia again). The mild was 1/6 (7.5p) a pint and the bitter 1/9 (9p). I couldn't for the life of me work out what the right price was for his order, but I finally realised that I'd undercharged him, and when he came back for a refill I told him that - to which he replied "I know you did; and you gave me a short measure too!" The correct price, by the way, was ninepence and three farthings (4p now).

Edited by YT (12 Aug 2022 4.45pm) In bygone days, bar staff had to calculate the 'Round' in their heads and work out the change to be handed back to the customer whilst dealing in pounds,shillings and pence. Finally I am of a certain vintage accordingly I recall the 'Public' bars separated from the 'Saloon' bar where the prices for the former were a tad less than those for the latter.
